The Accountant is responsible for managing the organisation's accounting functions.

The responsibilities of the Accountant will include, but are not limited to:
  • Review and approve financial transactions within assigned limits
  • Process and reconcile invoices and payments
  • Manage the accounts payable and receivable functions
  • Reconcile bank statements and resolve any discrepancies
  • Ensure timely and accurate posting of financial transactions
  • Work closely with the Bursary to ensure timely preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, risks, and cost-saving opportunities and recommend adjustments as needed
  • Identify and recommend improvements to accounting systems and financial processes
  • Provide actionable insights to support operational and strategic decision-making
  • Prepare and present financial reports and information to Management 
  • Compile documentation and schedules required for internal and external audits
  • Support the audit process and liaise with auditors to ensure appropriate financial oversight is maintained
  • Ensure compliance with applicable financial regulations and internal policies
  • Analyze actual revenue performance against budgets and business plans
  • Conduct cost-reduction evaluations and lead the development and implementation of cost containment strategies

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • ACCA Level 2 or higher, CPA or equivalent certification
  • At least 5 years of relevant accounting experience
  • Proficiency with accounting and inventory computer applications. Exposure to Ellucian Banner is considered a plus

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge and experience in accounting and auditing functions
  • A solid understanding of financial statistics and accounting principles
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills
  • Highly developed analytical, decision-making, leadership, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to think ‘outside the box’ and apply creative and constructive thinking to strategic direction and internal processes and procedures
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, written and presentation)
  • Able to manage, guide and lead employees to ensure appropriate financial processes are being used
  • Effective time management skills with flexibility to operate in a demanding environment
  • High level of professionalism and confidentiality
