Registered Nurses

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Registered Nurse.  The Dr. D. Orlando Smith Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the delivery of quality patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN is responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards. The RN collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes. The RN utilizes knowledge of patient’s age and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care. The registered nurse contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care. The RN provides care on a 24 hour basis including shift work and is an essential worker in periods of national or organizational disaster or emergencies.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

  1. Practices in accordance with the scope of nursing practice set out by the BVI Nursing and Midwives Council.
  2. Maintains current RN licensure, and relevant certifications and is responsible for keeping skill and knowledge level at an acceptable standard.
  3. Provides quality and compassionate nursing care to all patients and families

i)         Utilizes the Nursing Process to admit, plan and care for all patients

ii)       Assesses all patients at the start of shift, plans, and implements and evaluates patient care including discharge planning.

iii)      Assumes responsibility for patients on the patient care units

iv)     Monitors and documents patient’s responses to treatments and medications.

v)       Utilizes the holistic pattern in caring for patients

vi)     Reports on daily patient activities per shift. Provides regular status reports to the patient’s physician.

Provides care to patients requiring isolation and barrier techniques in a respectful manner and properly utilizes teaching, handwashing and PPEs to control and prevent the cross contamination and disease transmission to other patients, visitors and staff

  1. Adheres to hospital policies for the administration and management of medications

i)         Requisitions, stores, monitors, controls, administers and documents pharmaceuticals

ii)       Controls and secures Schedule I Dangerous Drugs and maintains legal records for Schedule I Dangerous Drugs.

iii)      Maintains accurate records and reporting systems for continuing care, legal purposes, and ensures that all members of the Health team are aware of patient-related matters.

iv)     Reconciles patient medication on admission, transfer and discharge

 Controls the patient’s environment to ensure safety, hygienic and aesthetic conditions, and control of noise and traffic flows.

i)         Ensure the readiness of the unit to respond to emergencies including the checking of code carts and emergency supplies each shift.

ii)       Requisitions and maintains equipment. Ensures quality checks on equipment.

iii)      Maintains unit stock and directs the requisition of medical stores as required.

Responds appropriately to patient’s and family calls, requests, needs, enquiries; and to the requests of other members of the Nursing Team.

  1. Responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards

i)         Assesses the patient’s and family’s education needs and plans, implements and evaluates teaching.

ii)       Coordinates patient care with other Hospital Units, external agencies, services, and organizations, for continued care and other forms of assistance.

iii)      Collaborates with other members of the Health Team to achieve the highest quality of care.

iv)     Collects and analyzes patient data to identify patient and family needs.

v)       Refers patients and families to Community Health Services to ensure continuing Nursing Care after discharge from Hospital.

i)         Delegates tasks to the Nursing Assistants, and Orderlies as necessary

vi)     Supervises all Junior and Unit based support staff in the delivery of patient care.

vii)    Assumes responsibility for all Nursing activities delegated to non-professional staff

 Contributes to the hospital risk management and Quality Improvement programme

i)         Submits reports on accidents, incidents, and such other occurrences to the Nursing Director, for risk management purposes.

ii)       Maintains professional competence by self-directed learning and participation in continuing educational opportunities and by keeping up-to-date with current research.

iii)      Serves as a service ambassador of Dr. D. Orlando Smith hospital in keeping with the mission and vision of the organization

iv)     Serves on boards and unit committees as required

 Responds promptly to institutional or other emergency calls requiring extra duty, mobilization of emergency systems, evacuation of patients or posting to other health stations or emergency command posts.

Assumes leadership and managerial roles in the absence of the Nurse Manager as delegated.

Performs other related duties which are consistent with the role profile and may be required in specialty units

Minimum Requirements:

Educational/Training Requirements

v  Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing/ Diploma /Associates Degree

 

Experience

v  Two (2) years’ experience in Nursing

 

Licenses/Certificates

v  Unencumbered BVI Nursing License and current registration to practice

v  Current certification in Basic Life Support

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities

v  Sound knowledge of Basic Nursing and Nursing Code of Ethics

v  Sound skill in the application of the Nursing Process to patient care

v  Therapeutic Communication skills

v  Sound human relation skills and team working skills

v  Sound oral and written communication skills

v  Knowledge of body mechanics and safe lifting techniques

Physical Demands

v  The individual may be required to pull up or reposition patients in bed, lift supplies, place equipment on supports, push beds throughout the hospital, and perform external cardiac compressions. The individual must be able to stoop to perform certain duties, e.g., check chest tube drainage, check urinary output, etc. The individual must also be able to maneuver throughout halls, stairways, and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies. Interpretation of environmental input requires visual and auditory skills. In the event there is a need to evacuate the building, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety.

v  Hospital Units including Emergency Room, Operating Room, Medical/Surgical, Special Nursing Care Unit.

 

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
