Registered Nurses

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Registered Nurse. As part of their daily responsibilities, the Registered Nurse will be required to provide daily care to patients (clients) and families within the assigned community. They will also be required to assist patients and families in the referral process to and from agencies and secondary health care services.  Additionally, they will participate in health promotion events and health education activities within the community.  Participate in community health surveillance of diseases and at risk groups and areas and also ensure appropriate management, documentation and surveillance of immunizations.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

  1. Admits and discharges patients in the Community Clinics daily, by following the correct procedural admission and discharging process. 
  2. Assess the health conditions of patients at clinics daily and also within the community as required.
  3. Provide cordial and professional nursing care services to patients coming into the clinics at all times.
  4. Administers medications including intramuscular (IM) and intravenous (IV), and IV fluids, as prescribed to persons within the community clinics and general community and maintain an effective record system showing document administration and response to administration at all times.
  5. Refer assessed patients to the physician or specialist nurse where necessary or as required to avoid any underlining discrepancies in patient care.
  6. Participate in domiciliary care to persons across the age spectrum with various conditions within the community as required or as advised by the Zone Manager.
  7. Maintain comprehensive and current documentation on patients and care provided during their visit or upon completion of patient care services provided.
  8. Maintain accurate and current documentation on health registers and logs daily.
  9. Ensures the timely collection, analysis and filing of patient investigations and make appropriate recommendations and referrals as needed.
  10. Performs venipuncture, IV insertion, for investigations and or treatment, in the absence of physician or phlebotomist as advised or as required.
  11. Participate in health team activities when necessary, to deliver comprehensive care to patients (clients) at all times.
  12. Participates in the referral of patients to secondary or tertiary care, and ensures continuity of care upon returning to the community.
  13. Participates in referring patients and their families to agencies that support health and wellness where necessary or as guided by the Zone Manager.
  14. Participates in the emergency response within communities once the need arises in a professional and efficient manner. 
  15. Monitors the community environment for health risks and needs and make appropriate recommendations in collaboration with the Public Health Nurse for appropriate referrals to agencies (Eg. Environmental Health, Social Services) where necessary.
  16. Participates in the safe handling of vaccines, cold chain management, weekly stock management, administration and recording of immunizations and maintenance of the monthly immunization coverage graph.
  17. Participate in surveillance and timely reporting of reportable diseases, conditions and incidents (Eg. Vaccine related diseases, newly diagnosed diabetic, abused child, needle injury) to appropriate persons and agencies (Eg. Public Health Nurse, Health Surveillance Officer, Social Services, Risk Manager), using the appropriate forms.
  18. On occasions and when necessary, follow-up interventions taken and evaluate response accordingly.
  19. Control, secure and maintain accurate legal records for Schedule 8 and 10 Dangerous Drug to avoid any unwanted discrepancies.
  20. Order stores as required, monitor, control and accurately document pharmaceuticals daily or as required.
  21. Ensuring timely reporting of default equipment for maintenance repairs and or purchasing to facilitate current update schedules for equipment and requisition at least once a month or as required.
  22. Participates in ensuring adequate stock of medical supplies are maintained and make timely requisitions
  23. Provides leadership to supporting nursing staff and supervises in the absence of nursing midwife/public health Nurse as required.
  24. Prepares staff duty roster, weekly assignments and reports, as may be assigned by nurse midwife/ Public Health Nurse
  25. Attends and participates actively in all scheduled meetings, workshops and other activities of professional development.
  26. Participates in case studies and research actives for continued development and skill enhancement.
  27. Performs any other related duties, which may be assigned  

Minimum Requirements:

Educational/Training Requirements

v  Bachelors’ of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN)

Experience

v  Minimum of 3 years as a Registered Nurse and in Community Health

 Licenses/Certifications

v  Registered with the General Nursing Council of the British Virgin Islands with current License

v  Valid Driver’s License

v  BLS and ACLS

Knowledge, skills and abilities

v  Nursing assessment, care plans, medication/ therapeutic administration

v  Emergency responses (including BLS and ACLS)

v  Management, documentation and reporting of vaccines

v  Stock management

v  Good verbal and written communication skills

v  Good human interpersonal relation skills

v  Supervisory skills

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
