Registered Nurses

Registered Nurse Psychiatric Nurse.  The Registered Nurse – Psychiatric Nurse administers direct and indirect nursing care to patients and families to promote and maintain optimal mental health; manages mental and physical disorders, and treat human responses to actual or potential physical or mental health problems.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

  1. Admits and discharges patients to the Nursing Unit as will be required. Develop and implement an effective discharge planning process on admission of patients.
  2. Collects and analyzes patient data daily to identify patient and family needs for improvement in delivering effective patient care
  3. Conducts an individualized patient assessment and develop a plan of care based on organizational policy
  4. Plans, implements and evaluates patient and family care regularly to include discharge planning.
  5. Provides care to patients who are experiencing acute mental distress, or have an enduring mental health problem, when the need arises.
  6. Monitors and documents patients’ responses to treatments and medications immediately following medical treatment was administered.
  7. Promotes a recovery based approach to care once the need arises.
  8. Produce care plans and risk assessments for individual patients who were admitted and are being administered inpatient care by the Hospital Services.
  9. Responds to distressed patients immediately and in a non-threatening manner and attempt to understand the source of distress.
  10. Controls the patient’s environment at all times, to ensure safety, hygienic and aesthetic conditions, and control of noise and traffic flows.
  11. Maintains accurate records and reporting systems for continuing care, for legal purposes, and ensure that all members of the Health team are aware of patient-related matters, when these situation arises.
  12. Assesses the patient’s and family’s education needs and plans, as needed and also implements and evaluates teaching.
  13. Designs and implements programs that foster mental health intervention for individuals who may require these services.
  14. Coordinates patient care with other Hospital Units, external agencies, services, and organizations, for continued care and other forms of assistance.
  15. Collaborates with other members of the Health Team to achieve continuation on the highest level of quality care.
  16. Refers patients and families to Community Health Services to ensure continuing Nursing Care after discharge from Hospital.
  17. Supervises all Junior and Unit based support staff in the delivery of patient care
  18. Requisitions, stores, monitors, controls, administer and documents pharmaceuticals.
  19. Controls, secures and maintains legal records for Schedule I Dangerous Drugs
  20. Requisitions and maintain equipment. Provides reports on durable equipment. Ensures quality checks on equipment.
  21. Reports on daily patient activities per shift. Submits reports on accidents, incidents, and such other occurrences to the Nursing Director, for Risk Management purposes. Provides regular status reports to the patient’s physician.
  22. Assumes responsibility for all Nursing activities delegated to non-professional staff
  23. Responds appropriately to patient’s and family calls, requests, needs, enquiries; and to the requests of other members of the Nursing Team
  24. Maintains professional competence by yearly assessment, self-directed leaning and participation in continuing educational opportunities and by keeping up-to-date with current research.
  25. Responds promptly to institutional or other emergency calls requiring extra duty, mobilization of emergency systems, evacuation of patients or posting to other health stations or emergency command posts.
  26. Performs any other related duties, which may be assigned from time to time.

Educational/Training Requirements

v  Diploma/Associates Degree/Bachelors in Nursing

v  Diploma/Certificate in Psychiatric Nursing

 

Experience

v  Four (4) year experience in Nursing with at least two (2) years’ experience in psychiatric nursing

v  Experience in working on psychiatric units, and/or psychiatric hospital/center

v  Experience with handling crisis situations/interventions

 

Licences/Certificates

v  Registered in the BVI with a current License

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities

v  Sound knowledge of basic Nursing and Mental Health Nursing

v  Sound knowledge of Nursing Code of Ethics

v  Sound skill in the application of the Nursing Process to patient care

v  Ability to function as part of a Health Team and lead a Nursing Team

v  Ability to initiate systems Emergency responses

v  Sound counseling skills for individuals and groups

v  Sound skill in decision making and time and stress management

v  Emotional resilience
