Registered Nurse Midwife- Community Nurse II

 

MANDATE

To deliver community health nursing programmes and services of a specific health district and community health center to ensure the effective promotion and maintenance of health care using primary health care approach

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Participate in the needs assessment of Community Health Nursing Services, the development and evaluation of Community Health Nursing programmes, the delivery of services and the operations of a community health center.
  • To conduct Community Health Nursing programmes/activities as assigned and collaborate with other members of the health team in the control of communicable and non-communicable diseases and in undertaking epidemiological surveillance.

KEY DUTIES (A FEW)

  • Participate in the needs assessment and planning of Community Health Nursing Services and the development and evaluation of Community Health Nursing programmes.
  • Participate in the organization and implementation of the Community Health Nursing programmes/services which include, but are not limited to:-
  1. Maternal and Child Health and Family Health
  2. Expanded Programme on Immunization (under supervision)
  3. Surveillance
  4. STI/HIV/AIDS
  • Collaborate with other members of the health team in the management of patient/client care and ensure that physicians’ orders and other therapeutic measures are carried out as prescribed.
  • Participate with the School Health Nurses in the delivery of School Health Programmes.
  • Carry out first home visit to post-natal women in accordance with Maternal and Child Health Policy.
  • Assist the Community Mental Health Nurse in the care of the mentally ill.
  • Maintain accurate records to ensure that all relevant health personnel are informed about the care and progress of clients.
  • Attend scheduled training in the use of the Electronic Health Record system and utilize the system as instructed
  • Assist staff in identifying and addressing the needs of patients and their families.
  • Foster community participation and promote an active community health committee in the district.
  • Ensure a safe environment for patients/clients, staff and members of the public by observing infection control precautions, removing hazards, reporting faulty equipment and adhering to and enforcing rules regarding health and safety.
  • Maintain an adequate stock of medication, equipment and supplies and ensure that they are stored safely and used appropriately.
  • Prepare and submit written reports on the operations of the Community Health Centre in each Health District to the Health District Manager in a timely manner.
  • Supervise other community nursing personnel in the delivery of nursing care and evaluate their work performance.
  •  Identify and participate in the study of nursing service challenges and in finding solutions.    
  •  Participate in relevant nursing research projects.  Maintain accurate statistical records and provide data to managers as required.
  •  Orientate and train new staff to their duties, the goals, objectives and Community Health      Nursing policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to the nursing standards, policies, procedures, protocols and the nursing code of ethics are adhered to.

QUALIFICATION

The incumbent must possess well developed theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in general nursing.  A Bachelor’s Degree in General Nursing, and Midwifery, training in supervisory management. Must be BLS, ACLS and PALS certified. At least (4) years’ experience in a similar or related job.

Sound theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in nursing and midwifery operations administration practices, procedures techniques and work methods, interpretative judgement, analytical and diagnostic skills as well as interpersonal, communicative and computer skills.

These knowledge and skills are obtained in the process of the acquisition of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing together with three (3) years in a similar or related job.
