Registered Nurse (Intensive Care Unit)
The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Registered Nurse (Intensive Care Unit). The Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital Registered Nurse (RN): Critical care is responsible for the delivery of quality patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN is responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards. The Critical Care Nurse must have expertise in recognizing complications in the intensive care patient. He/she is responsible for learning how to operate all technological equipment utilized in the unit. The functions performed require judgment based upon the application of scientific knowledge and are guided by the policies / guidelines of the organization and the unit. The RN collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes. The RN utilizes knowledge of patient’s age and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care. The registered nurse contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care. The RN provides care on a 24 hour basis including shift work and is an essential worker in periods of national or organizational disaster or emergencies.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):
1. Practices in accordance with the scope of nursing practice set out by the BVI Nursing and Midwives Council
2. Maintains current RN licensure, and relevant certifications and is responsible for keeping skill and knowledge level at an acceptable standard
3. Contributes to the improvement and maintenance of the BVIHSA's quality management system, ensuring that services meet acceptable standards through activities including (but not limited to) participation in process improvement projects, intentional adherence to the applicable standards (i.e. Department Policies, DNV, ISO, etc.), participation in addressing non-conformities
4. Provides quality and compassionate nursing care to all patients and families
i. Utilizes the Nursing Process to admit, plan and care for all patients
ii. Conducts an individualized patient assessment and develop a plan of care based on organizational policy.
iii. Assesses all patients at the start of shift, plans, and implements and evaluates patient care including discharge planning.
iv. Develop and implement discharge planning process on admission of patients
v. Assumes responsibility for patients on the patient care units
vi. Delegates tasks to the Nursing Assistant as necessary
vii. Plan, Monitors and documents patient’s responses to treatments and medications using Care Plans.
viii. Utilizes the holistic pattern in caring for patients
ix. Reports on daily patient activities per shift. Provides regular status reports to the patient’s physician.
x. The critical care nurse provides a critical function in resuscitation events and may be expected to lead the team in the absence of a physician.
xi. Keeps abreast of changing techniques in critical care nursing and maintains a high level of expertise in critical care
5. Adheres to policies for the administration and management of medications
i) Requisitions, stores, monitors, controls, administers and documents pharmaceuticals
ii) Controls, secures and maintains legal records for Schedule I Dangerous Drugs.
iii) Maintains accurate records and reporting systems for continuing care, legal purposes, and ensures that all members of the Health team are aware of patient-related matters.
iv) Reconciles patient medication on discharge
6. Controls the patient’s environment to ensure safety, hygienic and aesthetic conditions, and control of noise and traffic flows.
i) Requisitions and maintains equipment. Provides reports on durable equipment. Ensures quality checks on equipment.
ii) Maintains Unit stock and requisitions stores as required.
iii) Ensures that emergency supplies are stocked and Code Carts sealed at all times.
iv) Responds appropriately to patient’s and family calls, requests, needs, enquiries; and to the requests of other members of the Nursing Team.
7. Responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards
i) Assesses the patient’s and family’s education needs and plans, implements and evaluates teaching.
ii) Coordinates patient care with other Hospital Units, external agencies, services, and organizations, for continued care and other forms of assistance.
iii) Collaborates with other members of the Health Team to achieve the highest quality of care.
iv) Collects and analyzes patient data to identify patient and family needs.
v) Use data to address performance improvement needs of the Intensive Care Unit
vi) Refers patients and families to Community Health Services to ensure continuing Nursing Care after discharge from Hospital.
vii) Supervises all Junior and Unit based support staff in the delivery of patient care.
viii) Assumes responsibility for all Nursing activities delegated to non-professional staff
viv) Participates in or initiates CPR and Codes when necessary
8. Contributes to the hospital risk management and Quality Improvement program
i) Submits reports on accidents, incidents, and such other occurrences to the Nursing Director, for risk management purposes.
ii) Maintains professional competence by yearly assessment, self-directed learning and participation in continuing educational opportunities and by keeping up-to-date with current research.
iii) Serves as a service ambassador of Dr. D Orlando Smith Hospital in keeping with the mission and vision of the organization
iv) Serves on unit committees as required
v) Supports and participates in In-service Education Programs
9. Responds promptly to institutional or other emergency calls requiring extra duty, mobilization of emergency systems, evacuation of patients or posting to other health stations or emergency command posts.
10. Assumes leadership and managerial roles in the absence of the Nurse Manager as delegated
11. Performs other related duties which are consistent with the role profile and may be required in specialty units.
12.Adhere to Nursing Professional Code of Conduct of Ethics
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Educational/ Training Requirements
v Diploma /Associates Degree/Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
v Certification in Critical Care Nursing
Experience
v Three years experience in Nursing
Licenses/ certifications
v Unencumbered British Virgin Islands Nursing License with a current registration
v Current Certification in Basic Life Support
v Current Certification in Advance Life Support
Knowledge, skills and abilities
v Sound knowledge of Basic Nursing and Nursing Code of Ethics
v Sound skill in the application of the Nursing Process to patient care
v Ability to initiate systems Emergency responses
v Sound counseling skills
v Sound human relation skills and team working skills
v Sound oral and written communication skills
Physical demands
The individual may be required to pull up or reposition patients in bed, lift supplies, place equipment on supports, push beds throughout the hospital, and perform external cardiac compressions. The individual must be able to stoop to perform certain duties, e.g., check chest tube drainage, check urinary output, etc. The individual must also be able to maneuver throughout halls, stairways, and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies. Interpretation of environmental input requires visual and auditory skills. In the event there is a need to evacuate the building, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety.

SALARY: Associate $36,072.00 - $46,892.00
