Registered Nurse (Hemodialysis)

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants to apply for the position of Registered Nurse (Hemodialysis). Responsible for the direct and indirect care and management of patients undergoing Acute and Chronic dialysis treatments.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

  1. Sound Knowledge of Nursing and Organizational policies
  2. Participate In performance improvement projects on the unit.
  3. Provides direct care to patients who require acute and chronic Hemodialysis.
  4. Develops individualized plan of care for patients based on Organization’s Policy
  5. Admits new patients to the Hemodialysis Unit.
  6. Performs ongoing patient assessment prior to, during, and after Hemodialysis sessions.
  7. Provides chronic Hemodialysis therapy: formulate a dialysis plan for patient treatment, initiate dialysis via various accesses, and observe safety measures.
  8. Administers medications, fluid therapy or other appropriate treatments per physician and standing orders.
  9. Evaluates lab work, status of vascular access and reports changes or abnormalities to Nephrologist or Internist.
  10. Plan, Monitors and documents patient’s response to treatment and medication using Care Plans.
  11. Anticipates complications of dialysis and takes action to prevent/minimize complications.
  12. Works in collaboration with patient and other members of the interdisciplinary team to identify and address patient and family needs.
  13. Assess patient’s education needs and plans, implements and evaluates teaching.
  14. Maintains required supplies and evaluates inventory.
  15. Prepares and monitors dialysis machines and systems.
  16. Prepares dialysis water system for use and maintains dialysis delivery system according to institution’s policy and procedures.
  17. Takes appropriate precautions in the preparation, handling and management of dialysis machines and equipment.
  18. Documents events and report to risk manager using Meditech.
  19. Assists in providing orientation, training and education of all aspects of Hemodialysis to patients and other staff.
  20. Supervises all Junior and unit based support staff.
  21. Requisitions, stores, monitors, controls, administer and documents pharmaceuticals.
  22. Requisitions and maintains equipment. Provides reports on durable equipment. Ensures quality checks on equipment.
  23. Reports on patient activities during treatment. Submits reports of accidents, incidents, and such other occurrences for risk management purposes.
  24. Provides regular status to the Internist and Nephrologist.
  25. Ensures continuing development of junior staff through in-service education programs.
  26. Responds appropriately to patients and family calls, requests, needs, enquires and to the requests to other members of the Hemodialysis team.
  27. Maintains professional competence by yearly evaluation, self-directed learning and participation in continuing educational opportunities and by keeping up-to-date with current research. Submit certification copies to Nursing admin and HRD
  28. Responds promptly to institutional or other emergency calls requiring extra duty, mobilization of emergency systems, evacuation of patients or posting to other health stations or emergency command posts.
  29. Performs any other related duties, which may be assigned from time to time.
  30. Maintain Professional Conduct as outlines in Nursing Code of Ethics

Minimum REQUIREMENTS:

Educational/Training Requirements:

v  Diploma/Associate Degree/Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

v  Certification in Hemodialysis Nursing (CHN)

v  Basic and Advance Life Support

 

Experience:

v  Registered nurse with 3 years’ experience.

v  Has worked in Hemodialysis setting or with patients with renal impairment.

 

Licenses/Certifications:

v  Registered and licensed with the General Nursing Council of the British Virgin Islands

v  Certificate in Hemodialysis Nursing BLS trained and certified

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

v  Sound knowledge of Basic Nursing

v  Sound knowledge of Nursing Code of Ethics

v  Sound skill in the application of the nursing process to patient care

v  Knowledge and competence in delivering Hemodialysis nursing skills.

v  Ability to function as part of a Health Team and lead a Nursing Team.

v  Ability to initiate systems Emergency responses.

v  Ability to be self-directed and work effectively with others at all levels.

v  Ability to problem-solve and initiate corrective actions.

v  Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and maintain interpersonal relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors and staff from other services.

v  Sound oral and written communication skills.

 

Physical Demands:

v  Heavy lifting, pushing, mobilization of patients and equipment.

v  Continuous standing and walking visits.

 

Work Environment:

v  Hemodialysis clinic and hospital environment.

v  Shift work.

v  Essential services worker designation

v  Exposure to hazards (physical, biological, chemical)

 

SALARY: Associate $36,072.00 - $46,892.00

         Bachelor $44,286.00 - $57,576.00 (Commensurate with qualifications and experience.)
