LOCATION:                           Grand Turk (but at the discretion of the Director of Mental Health

and Substance Abuse, may be relocated to another part of TCI.  Travel

to other islands is expected)

JOB SUMMARY:            

The purpose of this job is to ensure provision of a high standard of Mental Health Care to the residents of Zone 1 (Grand Turk, South Caicos and Salt Cay).  The incumbent in this position will have responsibility for ensuring that mental health clients are given adequate treatment in a timely and effective manner.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensure that out-patient psychiatric clinics are conducted regularly in zone 1.
  2. Conduct psychiatric clinics at Her Majesties Prison (HMP)
  3. Oversee operation of Mental Health Facility
  4. Work collaboratively with staff assigned to conduct out-patient Psychiatric services; such staff may include other psychiatrists, Mental Health Nurses, Mental Health Aide and other staff assigned.
  5. Conduct a complete psychiatric assessment of all assigned or referred clinic patients and develop an appropriate management plan for the patients consulted.
  6. Provide psychiatric assessments and management to persons referred for psychiatric evaluation from the hospital, prison and Magistrates, Primary Health clinics, Social Services and private clinics.
  7. Implement and monitor community mental health programs in collaboration with Community Mental Health Nurses and Aides and social workers.
  8. Work collaboratively with hospital based physicians, nurses, substance abuse counsellors and social workers in the care of psychiatric in-patients.
  9. Prepare discharge management plans for community management of Psychiatric in-patients.
  10. Provide supportive therapy/psychotherapy to clients.
  11. Maintain patient confidence and protects the Department by keeping information confidential.
  12. Make sound recommendations to the Director of Mental health and Substance Abuse for overseas treatment referral of psychiatric patients needing care not available in the TCI.
  13. To develop and conduct continuing medical education for the staff and other health providers
  14. Adhere to all Public Service codes, rules and regulations
  15. Perform other related tasks as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Post Graduate Qualification in Psychiatry
  • Fluent in English, written and oral
  • Knowledge of Creole or Spanish is an asset
  • 3 years post graduate experience in Psychiatry
  • Experience in Drug Abuse management and rehabilitation is an asset
  • Experience in Forensic Psychiatry would be an asset
  • Experience in Child Psychiatry would be an asset

 

COMPENSATION:

 

  • Grade 8.1: $53,193.40 per annum plus allowances

 

For persons recruited outside of the Turks & Caicos Islands a two-year extendable contract is offered. Other benefits in addition to basic salary include a Housing Allowance, End-of contract gratuity of 6%, return passages for a family of up to two children under the age of 18 years, freight cost and duty exemption on personal effects imported within six months of the appointment.
