Job Summary:

The Portfolio Manager is independent of all other functions within the company, and is responsible for advising, directing and undertaking on behalf of the client’s customers, pursuant to a contract or arrangement with a client, with or without discretionary authority, the management of their portfolio. This to be done from risk gold-based portfolio approach, in accordance with the investment management documents i.e., the investment management agreement, investment policy statement, investor risk profile and any other document which governs how a client’s account is managed. The Portfolio Manager is charged with the responsibility to manage, document and report (internally and externally) on all portfolio management activities, while acting independently of other operations of the company, in compliance with the Trinidad and Tobago Securities and Exchange Commissions (TTSEC) regulations

 

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Contributes positively to ensure that the client’s overall strategic business plan targets are met by:
    • Developing strategies to increase return on investment and minimise risk and loss on investment portfolios
  • Conducts core duties pertaining to the function such as:
    • Preparing, collecting and disseminating market information to clients, department and Asset Management
    • Providing timely reports to relevant parties internally and externally in compliance with internal policies and procedures and TTSEC regulations
    • Monitoring and forecasting trends in TTD and USD currency liquidity, as well as primary capital market activity and liquidity in secondary capital markets
    • Setting the department’s objective for Asset Under Management (AUMs) and other investment product portfolios from a risk goal-based portfolio approach
    • Designing, organizing and maintaining client portfolios
    • Managing client’s assets according to investment preferences and goals from a risk goal-based portfolio approach
    • In relation to the management of a client account:
  • setting the objectives of investments/ the portfolio and the associated risks;
  • determining the asset mix; portfolio strategy formulation;
  • securities selection;
  • monitoring and rebalancing of portfolio; and evaluation of performance
    • Providing instructions to the client to execute transactions on behalf of the client and documenting support for said instructions
    • Maintaining a register of the details of soft commission accepted or received
    • Managing client accounts in accordance with the investment management document, risk profile and other governing documents from a risk goal-based portfolio approach
    • Maintaining high standards of integrity and fairness in all dealings with clients
    • Reviewing the analysis of clients to determine suitability for investment and make recommendations and documenting same
    • Conducting preparation and review of materials used in marketing materials and investments tools
    • Contributing positively to portfolio and liquidity management from a risk goal-based portfolio approach
    • Managing portfolios to guard against any gap risk re. liquidity, Foreign Exchange, tenor etc.
    • Ensuring risk perspective, due diligence, due process, due regard, duty of care, return on time, quality assurance and compliance guides all actions.
  • Ensures that all corporate governance, human resources and leadership functions are effectively carried out by:
    • Submitting quarterly reports to the Investment Committee and the Risk Management Committee on the department’s performance, portfolio performance and any other relevant matters (Earlier alert if necessary)
    • Providing guidance to the Business Development, Investor Services and Corporate Finance departments concerning clients’ investment portfolios
    • Providing the relevant documentation to enable the due diligence process
    • Ensuring that the unit’s staff are consistently kept up-to-date on any client developments etc.
  • Ensures that the client maintains compliance with relevant laws and regulations by:
  • Monitoring the external regulatory environment and internal operating guidelines within set parameters
  • Developing internal controls and procedures for executing transactions, providing investment advice and compliance with the Securities Act and intended Portfolio Manager By-Laws
  • Developing, implementing and maintaining risk goal-based portfolio management controls
  • Establishing and maintaining risk management systems and controls to enable it to identify, assess, mitigate, control and monitor risks in relation to each client account it manages
  • Fostering and championing a culture of compliance in adherence with the mandates of the Securities Act and its By-Laws, intended portfolio Manager By-Laws and Internal Compliance guidance
  • Ensuring that high standards of service, due diligence, proper care and independent professional judgement are always conducted
  • Ensuring that proper know your customer (KYC) procedures are implemented and adhered to, to comply with legal requirements and policies and procedures regarding the proper establishment of relationships with clients
  • Ensuring that all required documentation, security and risk management systems are properly in place and followed in order that the client achieves at least a Satisfactory or better Audit rating from TTSEC/Audit and the Company does not suffer any financial loss, or negative image/exposure due to a lack of care in this area
  • Maintains superior quality customer service by:
  • Building effective relationships with brokers, analysts, TTSEC, TTSE, financial institutions and management of current and prospective holdings
  • Fostering and maintaining client relationships
  • Providing clients with true and adequate information without making any misguided or exaggerated claims
  • Ensuring that each non-discretionary client is made aware of the risks before any investment
  • Ensuring that each client account has been appropriately risk rated and that investments are conducted in accordance with their individual risk profiles from a risk gold-based portfolio approach
  • Preparing client account information, reports and other required documentation to facilitate internal and external audit review
  • Maintaining records of client assets and client accounts in a manner that is easily accessible and retrievable in compliance with TTSEC regulations and internal policies and procedures
    • Providing superior quality customer service by being proactive and anticipating client needs to ensure that the client’s customer’s expectations are exceeded
  • Projects a favourable and professional image at all times, maintaining loyalty and respect for the client.

Job Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in either Finance, Banking, Economics or any other related field
  • CFA Certification in place of a Bachelor’s degree is accepted
  • An MBA would be an asset

 

Job Experience:

  • A minimum of four (4) year’s experience in portfolio management and Finance which includes three (3) years knowledge of local and international investment products, valuation, portfolio and risk management
