Orthopedic Technician is a trained health care professionals who perform a variety of functions catering to the needs of patients with Orthopedic related conditions, at all times complying with the physicians orders.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

 

The duties of the Orthopedic Technician include the following:

  • Application and removal of casts, splints/braces and other orthopedic appliances to patients. The technologist must be knowledgeable of the various kinds of casts and splints and the proper procedures/techniques for applying and removing the same.
  • Application of various types of traction including skin and skeletal and maintaining the correct configuration to ensure its effectiveness and achieve the ultimate objective.
  • Assists the surgeon/ doctor in surgical and non surgical procedures some of which include prepping/draping the patients. Additionally he must ensure that various pieces of equipment necessary for the particular procedure are in working order and rapidly available for use.
  • Must be available for regular ward rounds to receive updates on patients continued care.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the various types of orthopedic related material and the appropriate uses.
  • Maintain and manages small inventory of supplies and paying attention to expiration dates.
  • Responds to emergency calls beyond the regular working hours as determined by his superior including weekends and public holidays.
  • Prepares traction equipment on the orthopedic ward.
  • Assists with the preparation of the orthopedic trolley in the operating theatre.
  • Any other task given at the discretion of the senior orthopedic technician

 

QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Orthopedic certification from an accredited institution
  • High school diploma, with a minimum of 4 CXC subjects in grade I, II OR III including English, Mathematics and Biology.
  • Training in Orthopedic procedure and practice preferred.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours.
  • Must be familiar with orthopedic terminologies.
  • Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopedic conditions based upon a basic understanding of anatomical structures and their relationship with one another.
  • Ability to interpret most fractures and dislocations on an X-Ray.
  • Ability to apply, adjust and remove orthopedic devices.
  • Knowledge of the theory and application of skin and skeletal traction
  • Knowledge of the proper application of aseptic techniques in dressing change and in settling up surgical fields/draping in the operating room.
