Medical Technologist with Histotechnologist/Cytotechnologist

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Applicants must have:

• Associate or Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology with specialty in Cytology/Histology, plus two years experience in a Laborotory setting.     
• Certificate or Diploma in Cytotechnology/Histology

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Prepare microscopic slides from specimens of blood, scrapings, or other bodily exudates,  fixes and stain slide to preserve specimen and enhance visibility of cells under microscope.
2. Prepare and analyze samples, such as Papanicolaou (PAP) smear body to detect abnormal conditions.
3. Examine slides under microscopes to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements
4. Adjust, maintain, or repair laboratory equipment such as microscopes.
5. Assist pathologists or other physicians to collect cell samples such as by fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies, cytology and bone marrow aspirate/biopsy.
6. Establish and monitor quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.
7. Perform quality control checks of instruments, solutions, and test results against established standards.

8. Provide teaching, oversight and supervision of medical tech students and other junior staff as required. 
9. Refer performance issues in a timely manner to the immediate supervisor.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Ability to interpret medical/surgical terminology
• Working knowledge and demonstrated understanding of all aspects of the area of Cytology and Histology.
• Demonstrated ability to keep updated with current scientific data with respect to medical laboratory technology and Cytology.
• Ability to perform highly detailed microscopic work for long periods of time.
• Ability to communicate effectively with employees and other health care professionals
• Ability to handle assignments independently.
• Ability to pay attention to detail
• Excellent time management skills.
• Ability to work under pressure, conduct sound analysis and ensure accuracy.
• Must be flexible with working hours

Salary will be paid in accordance with the terms stipulated by the Board of St. Jude Hospital in the Estimates of Expenditure commensurate with experience and qualifications for the post.
