Medical Specilaist - Anesthesiologist

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of MEDICAL SPECIALIST - ANETHESIOLOGIST.  The Medical Specialist: Anesthesiologist will be responsible for the provision of specialist diagnosis, care and treatment at Peebles Hospital and other locations as determined by the needs of the service.  This includes involvement with any major accident, incident or disaster in the BVI.  The Anesthesiologist is responsible for ensuring that standards of performance in the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Units are in keeping with accreditation requirements and evidence based practice. The specialist will be expected to provide on-call cover and to participate in the rota for Medical Specialist.  The Specialist is also expected to participate in the clinical training, development and supervision of junior medical, nursing and paramedical staff.  An interest in continuing medical information for self and other staff is necessary.  Interest and proficiency in a sub-specialty is welcome and will be encouraged.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

CLINICAL DUTIES – (35 hours.)

  1. Pre-operative assessment and management of all cases requiring elective or emergency surgery as well as those in need of sedation and/ or monitored Anesthetic Care.
  2. Maintains adequate and timely documentation of case management and patient contact and care.
  3. Conducts weekly anesthetic preoperative clinic.
  4. Delivers safe anesthesia for all elective and emergency surgical procedures,
  5. Conduct procedures in the area of Anesthesia and Critical Care, or supervises same done by Registrars, Medical Officers or the CRNA.
  6. Provides Sedation and Monitored Anesthetic Care as required.
  7. Provides on-call services as rostered including first on-call as necessary.
  8. Coordinates with the surgical services, the Operating Room Manager/Supervisor and other theatres for the smooth and efficient functioning of the operating suite and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit.
  9. Ensures that acute pain management is safely delivered.
  10. Primarily responsible for the management of ventilated patients within the Intensive Care Unit.
  11. Provides specialty services in the area of subspecialty.
  12. Provides advice to Chief Medical Staff on overseas referral as needed.
  13. Availability as an essential worker to respond to Mass Casualties or Disasters.
  14. Any other related duties as assigned from time to time as necessary.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:    5 hours

  1. Collaborate in the development of policies, protocols, procedures, processes and guidelines for risk reduction and to enhance the quality and safety of Anesthetic and ICU care.
  2. Responsibility for the co-ordination of the Medical/Nursing/ICU Team and their sourcing and utilization of beds and other resources, such as diagnostic and therapeutic services.
  3. Contributes towards policies, protocols and procedures developed by nurses and paramedical professions.
  4. Contributes toward patient and public education regarding the reduction of risks associated with medical complaints and emergencies.
  5. Contributes towards clinical training, research and staff development in anesthetics and ICU including unit and departmental continued medical education session.
  6. Facilitate a CME upon return from attendance to BVIHSA sponsored external Current Clinical Updates.
  7. Conduct at least 2 Clinical Audits per year.
  8. Actively participates and takes the lead in the clinical committee in Anesthetics and ICU/ Surgery and the Operating Room.
  9. Supervises juniors (registrars, medical officers, nurses, CRNA, medical students or paramedical) assigned from time-to-time.
  10. Participates in Medical Board, prepare Medical Reports and attend Court as necessary.
  11. Such other duties as considered consistent with the role profile.
Minimum Requirements:

Education & Experience

  • UWI Doctor of Medicine (DM) in Anesthetics OR
  • US or Canadian State Board Certified OR
  • Royal Colleges Fellowship/Membership and at least three years in training positions in teaching institutions with recommendations from consultant OR
  • Previous consultant/ Medical Specialist positions
  • A minimum of three years practice post specialty training.

Licenses and/or registrations

  • Current registration and license with the BVI Medical & Dental Council (kept updated).
  • Membership of a Medical Defense Organization/Insurance Coverage for negligence.  The post holder is expected to be a member of a recognized medical defense organization or to have insurance coverage in lieu of such membership.
  • Continued professional education & training:  - The post holder is expected to negotiate an annual programme of professional education and training in discussion with the Chief of Medical Staff or direct supervisor.  The BVI Health Service Authority will make a contribution towards the plan but the post holder is expected to bear some of the costs.
  • Current Malpractice Insurance: -   The post holder is expected to have and maintain insurance coverage for malpractice.
  • ACLS and PALS certified.

  • Must be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Able to work without supervision.
  • Working  knowledge of Quality Control and  Risk Management
  • Ability to inspire trust and confidence by both health professionals and users of the service alike.
  • Sound oral and written communication skills in working with a cross section of multicultural staff and the general public.
  • Excellent human relations skills and capable of dealing with conflict in a positive fashion in order to bring about positive change.
  • In addition to basic medical skills, proficiency in special kills such as CVP line access, Advanced Airway Techniques.

  • Long hours often in high stressed environment.

  • Operating Theatre/PACU/Wards/ICU/ER
  • On-call Arrangements: - Coverage is expected as rostered or as required.
  • Post holder is expected to work within hospital and clinic setting.
  • Exposure to multiple hazards.
  • Essential worker- required to respond to emergency duty during times of crises and disaster.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
