Medical Specialist General Surgeon

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Medical Specialist – General Surgeon.  The Medical Specialist – General Surgeon will be responsible for the provision of surgical specialist diagnosis, care and treatment at Peebles Hospital and other locations as determined by the needs of the service.  This includes involvement with any major accident, incident or disaster in the BVI. The Surgeon is responsible for ensuring that standards of performance in the surgical unit are in keeping with accreditation requirements and evidence based practice. The specialists will be expected to provide on-call cover and to participate in the rota for Medical Specialist.  The Specialist is also expected to participate in the clinical training, development and supervision of junior medical, nursing and paramedical staff.  An interest in continuing medical information for self and other staff is necessary.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

CLINICAL DUTIES – (35 hours.)

  1. Assessment, diagnosis, treatment, care and management of all surgical patients, on an in-patient, out-patient and day patient basis, including emergency cases.
  2. Ensures appropriate and timely documentation of patient care contact and case management, interpretation of diagnostic tests, treatment prescribed for execution by nursing and other staff, and interventions undertaken.
  3. Coverage of two six hour out-patient clinics per week.
  4. Provides on-call services as rostered including first on-call as necessary.
  5. Conduct procedures in the area of general surgery including minimally invasive surgery, and supervises authorized procedures done by Registrars or Medical Officers.
  6. Provides specialty services in the area of subspecialty.
  7. Provides advice to Chief Medical Staff on overseas referral as needed.
  8. Availability as an essential worker to respond to Mass Casualties or Disasters.
  9. Any other related duties as assigned from time to time as necessary.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES (5 hours)

  1. Collaborate in the development of policies, protocols, procedures, processes and guidelines for risk reduction and to enhance the quality and consistency of treatment, diagnosis and follow up of surgical complaints in the specialty area.
  2. Responsibility for the co-ordination of the Medical/Nursing Team and their utilization of beds and other resources, such as diagnostic and therapeutic and referral services.
  3. Collaborates with the Primary Care Team for Integrated Care and Continuity of Care.
  4. Contributes towards policies, protocols and procedures developed by nurses and paramedical professions.
  5. Contributes toward patient and public education regarding the reduction of risks associated with surgical complaints and emergencies.
  6. Contributes towards clinical training, research and staff development in surgery including unit and departmental continued medical education sessions
  7. Facilitate a CME upon return from attendance to BVIHSA  sponsored external Current Clinical Updates
  8. Conduct at least 2 Clinical Audits per year.
  9. Actively participates and takes the lead in the Surgical and Operating Room Clinical Committee.
  10. Supervises juniors (registrars, medical officers, nurses, medical students or paramedical) assigned from time-to-time.
  11. Participates in Medical Board, prepare Medical Reports and attend Court as necessary.
  12. Such other duties as considered consistent with the role profile.

 

Minimum Requirements:

Education & Experience

 

  • UWI Doctor of Medicine (DM) in Surgery OR
  • US or Canadian State Board Certified OR
  • Royal Colleges Fellowship/Membership and at least three years in training positions in teaching institutions with recommendations from consultants OR
  • Previous Consultant/Medial Specialist positions are appropriate.
  • A minimum of two/three years practice post specialty training.

 

Licenses and/or registrations

 

  • Current registration with the BVI Medical & Dental Council (kept updated). 
  • Membership of a Medical Defense Organization/Insurance Coverage for negligence.  The post holder is expected to be a member of a recognized medical defense organization or to have insurance coverage in lieu of such membership.
  • Continuing professional education & training:  - The post holder is expected to negotiate an annual programme of professional education and training. The BVI Health Service Authority will make a contribution towards the plan but the post holder is expected to bear some of the costs.
  • Current Malpractice Insurance: - The post holder is expected to have and maintain insurance coverage for malpractice.
  • ACLS certified.

  • Working Knowledge of Hospital Management
  • Must be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Able to work without supervision.
  • Working  knowledge of Quality Control and  Risk Management
  • Ability to inspire trust and confidence by both health professionals and users of the service alike.
  • Sound oral and written communication skills in working with a cross section of multicultural staff and the general public.
  • Excellent human relations skills and capable of dealing with conflict in a positive fashion in order to bring about positive change.

 

Physical Demands

  •  Long hours often in a high stressed environment.

 

Work Environment

  •  Post holder is expected to work within hospital and clinic setting.
  •  On-call Arrangements:  Coverage is expected as rostered or as required.
  •  Exposure to multiple hazards.
  • Essential worker- required to respond to emergency duty during times of crises, mass casualties and disaster.

 

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
