Medical Officer (Community)

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Medical Officer. This post provides preventative and curative medical care to persons in community, including domiciliary care and live-in government agencies. Participates in public health, chronic disease and chronic infectious disease programs.  Participates in health education and promotion programs within the community.  Participates in continuing professional development. 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

  1. Examines, investigates, diagnose and treats patients in response to presenting complaints and clinical history.
  2. Communicate with client’s diagnosis and management care plans
  3. Participate in comprehensive care through referring and consultations of clients to specialists, allied health providers and social agencies.
  4. Participate in chronic disease, chronic infectious disease, school health, child health, family planning, occupational health and environmental health programs
  5. Participate in health promotions and education within communities
  6. Participate in continued medical education programs to health care providers
  7. Prescribe medications and therapies according to best practice and administer as is appropriate
  8. Manages and treats minor surgical conditions and medical emergencies.
  9. Documents medical and emergency management and care of clients including the production of medical reports as required.
  10. Participate in community profiling and surveillance of disease
  11. Documents and reports communicable diseases
  12. Documents and reports child abuse
  13. Contributes to and takes part in training and development for members of the health team. This includes in service training seminars, lectures or attachments, writing protocols or procedures
  14. Perform any other related duties, consistent with the overall role profile that may be assigned by supervisors

Minimum Requirements:

Educational/Training Requirements

v  Medical Degree (MBBS/MD)

v  Post graduate training (Diploma, MSc, DM or equivalent) in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and or Public Health (additive)

Experience

v  Successful completion of internship consisting of minimum of 3 months in Internal Medicine, General Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

v  Minimum of 3 years of clinical practice as a Senior House Officer with a minimum of 6 months in Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine or Family Medicine

Licenses/Certifications

v  Registered with the Medical Council in country of origin

v  Registered with the Medical Council of the British Virgin Islands

v  BLS and or ACLS, PALS, NALS

v  Driver’s License

Knowledge, skills and abilities

v  Sound knowledge and competence in best practice general/family medicine (internal, family, pediatric, surgery) and ability to work unsupervised

v  Ability to work as part of a team with other health professionals.

v  Sound oral and written communication skills

v  Sound human relation skills

v  Basic computer skills

Physical Demands

v  The physical demands are minimal and typical of similar jobs in comparable organizations.

v  On-call duties within the community

v  Travel to different clinics within the BVIHSA community and provide domiciliary care

Work Environment

v  The work environment is representative and typical of similar jobs in comparable organizations.

v  Travel to different clinics within the BVIHSA community

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
