This role is offered as a short-term consultancy position based in Jamaica and is open to local nationals only. Project HOPE is operating in the Western Parishes, with its main office located in Montego Bay. The consultant must be able to be based in, or relocate to, one of the following parishes: Westmoreland, St. James, Trelawny, Hanover, or St. Elizabeth.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Medical Doctor is responsible for performing consultations in clinics to diagnose, treat and manage patients in line with MoH and WHO guidelines, controls the rational distribution of medicine and performs medical diagnoses with competence in the health facility.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assess patient condition, diagnose and prescribe treatment and/or refer complicated cases in line with clinical guidelines and hygiene protocols.
  • Determine when patients should be discharged or transferred, ensuring referrals are managed efficiently to minimize complications.
  • Control the rational distribution of medicine and equipment; ensure sterilization and good maintenance of medical equipment, report any malfunctioning to supervisor.
  • Keep the patient and family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow; verify understanding to ensure informed consent and adherence to treatment.
  • Ensure data traceability by recording all medical activities on patient’s card and in registration books such that patient treatment is continuous.
  • Participate in community mobilization and sensitization on curative and preventative health services.
  • Ensure general hygiene standards and universal precautions are always followed and implement and monitor actions to reduce bio-hazard risks and improve infection control.
  • Ensure that medical decisions are made with the highest level of integrity and ethics according to the professional Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure direct reports have clear objectives, receive mentorship, and participate in capacity building opportunities.
  • Ensure data collected is accurate and submit reports according to schedule.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor degree in Medicine, Post graduation in Medicine education is desirable.
  • One year experience in working in public or private nursing colleges, Hospitals, experience with other NGOs, desirable.
  • Understanding humanitarian work / having worked with vulnerable populations.
  • Knowledge of the environments, understanding of health system in Jamaica and social protection system
  • Experience in social services departments (NGOs, Governmental organizations).
  • Fluency in English.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Consultants should be able to work in an office setting, communicate effectively, and travel as needed. Assignments may include field or emergency deployments in austere or hardship environments. Typical office noise is minimal, and travel may involve air or other modes of transportation.
