Background

Our client maintains and services a range of heavy equipment in Barbados. The range of equipment may include various types of transport equipment, loaders, trucks, Forklifts, container handlers, lifting and access equipment, tractors etc.

 

The ideal candidate will have the required technical knowledge supported by appropriate academic qualifications, benefitted from relevant technical training courses, and has suitable experience in a workshop setting. Candidates with the ability to supervise, or who has received supervisory or management training, will be favoured for selection.

Summary

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the maintenance, servicing and/or repair of heavy-duty equipment in a workshop setting. He/she will contribute to the maintenance of an efficient workshop and will utilize testing, analysis and optimization of the performance of mechanical and electromechanical equipment and systems. The Mechanical Engineer will provide diagnostics and preventive and/or corrective maintenance on all assigned vehicles, equipment or machinery.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Diagnose, service and repair a wide range of components including mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, computer controlled automatic and manual transmissions, electric motors and batteries.
  • Service and repair pneumatic systems including closed-centre systems, load-sensing systems, and electro-hydraulic controls.
  • Inspect heavy equipment and construction equipment and perform trouble shooting and diagnostic inspections.
  • Use computerized diagnostic and testing equipment and leverage OEM-specific diagnostic software and multi-brand diagnostic tools.
  • Conduct vehicle and equipment servicing requirements as per manufacturers and vendors’ instructions and guidelines.
  • Maintain operational and mechanical safety re: issues associated with heavy duty equipment and machines.
  • Communicate effectively with technical staff, other employees and vendors; Consult with other mechanics and engineers when required.
  • Adhere to all safety and security protocols while on the job including the company’s information systems security policies and procedures.
  • Maintain repair/maintenance records in accordance with company policy.
  • Train and assist other colleagues as required.
  • Check repairs and/or test equipment repaired as directed by management.
  • Complete, update and maintain various reports and key performance indicators
  • Supervise workers, technicians, technologists and other engineers.
  • Assess and document the performance of team members.

Summary of Skills and Qualifications Requirements

  • Graduate in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution with a minimum of 5 years’ experience.
  • A Post Graduate Qualification would be a plus.
  • Proven experience working with heavy duty vehicles, equipment and machinery. 
  • Sound knowledge of diesel engines and electric vehicles inclusive of electronic control units (ECUs), CAN bus systems, and onboard diagnostics specific to specialised heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems, inclusive of closed-centre systems, load-sensing systems, and electro-hydraulic controls.
  • Expertise in developing and maintaining maintenance processes and procedures and strong equipment maintenance expertise including electromechanical equipment.
  • Experience and expertise re: implementation of Engineering Control Systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience and/or aptitude re: supervising or managing systems, people and business processes.
