Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the maintenance of an efficient workshop through the testing, analysis and optimization of the performance of mechanical and electromechanical equipment and systems. He or she will provide diagnostics and preventive and/or corrective maintenance on all assigned vehicles, equipment or machinery. The Mechanical Engineer will also inspect vehicles, engines and equipment, carry out service procedures, conduct repairs, and maintain a range of heavy-duty equipment.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Diagnose, service and repair various systems found on pieces of heavy equipment including but not limited to excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, skid steers, wheel loaders, motor graders, and compact equipment.
  • Diagnose, service and repair a wide range of components including mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, computer controlled automatic and manual transmissions, electric motors and batteries.
  • Service and repair pneumatic systems including closed-centre systems, load-sensing systems, and electro-hydraulic controls.
  • Inspect buses, trucks, and other heavy equipment and construction equipment and perform trouble shooting and diagnostic inspections.
  • Use computerized diagnostic and testing equipment and leverage OEM-specific diagnostic software and multi-brand diagnostic tools.
  • Conduct vehicle and equipment servicing requirements as per manufacturers and vendors’ instructions and guidelines and perform major repair work when necessary.
  • Follow manufacturers’ instructions and guidelines designed to ensure optimum equipment performance.
  • Maintain operational and mechanical safety re: issues associated with heavy duty equipment and machines.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance such as lubricating, oil changes, and failure analysis; perform routine brake inspections/adjustments on commercial vehicles.
  • Communicate in an effective manner with technical staff, other employees and vendors on facility equipment problems or suggested improvements; consult with other mechanics and engineers when required.
  • Wear approved protective equipment while on the job.
  • Maintain repair/maintenance records in accordance with company policy.
  • Attend training and practice knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and all company policies and procedures as they relate to safety practices; train and assist other colleagues.
  • Check repairs and/or test drive vehicles as agreed to and/or directed by management.
  • Attend ongoing training via personal initiatives and by participating in company sponsored training; provide training and guidance to other technical staff when required.
  • Complete, update and/or maintain various reports and monitor Key Performance Indicators.
  • Participate in and support the company’s information systems security policies and procedures.
  • Supervise workers, technicians, technologists and other engineers, and design of performance appraisal programs.
  • Implement and manage effective preventative maintenance protocols, procedures and practices.

Summary of Skills and Qualifications Requirements

  • Graduate or Post Graduate Qualifications in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution with a minimum of 5 years’ experience.
  • Proven experience working with heavy duty vehicles, equipment and machinery such as excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, skid steers, wheel loaders, motor graders, and compact equipment. 
  • Extensive knowledge of diesel engines and electric vehicles inclusive of electronic control units (ECUs), CAN bus systems, and onboard diagnostics specific to construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems, including closed-centre systems, load-sensing systems, and electro-hydraulic controls.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining maintenance processes and procedures and strong equipment maintenance expertise including electromechanical equipment.
  • Experience and expertise re: implementation of Engineering Control Systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience and/or aptitude re: supervising or managing systems, people and business processes.
