Maritime Programme Instructor

The H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in the British Virgin Islands is seeking an exceptional candidate to fill the role of Maritime Programme Instructor. The instructor works under the direction and guidance of the Maritime Programme Manager, and in consultation with the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry (VISR) to assist in the development and implementation of Maritime Training which leads to certification of mariners. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Duties & Responsibilities

• Coordinate and assist with the delivery of maritime and marine courses, programmes and related resources.
• Assist in generating revenue through workshops/seminars and presentations.
• Assist in the supervision of the maritime or marine programme by ensuring training needs are met;
• Assist in the design and development of training materials in accordance with the needs of the British Virgin Islands and Caribbean Island Maritime Industry, and VISR.
• Deliver training (e.g. courses/workshops) in the maritime programme;
• Assist the Maritime Manager in identifying, creating and developing relevant training materials.
• Assist the Maritime Programme Manager in the requisite training and development of faculty and staff attached to the maritime programme for safety courses including personal safety and social responsibility, first aid and medical courses including elementary first aid, fire courses including fire prevention and firefighting and survival courses including personal survival techniques.
• Assist in the development of quality assurance standard, and related health and safety requirements of the maritime programme.
• Assist in ensuring continuous improvement of services provided by the team and/or faculty responsible for the maritime programme.
• Undertake other duties commensurate with the post title as may be necessary.
• Assist the Maritime Manager with the effective and efficient instruction of courses and operations conducted by the Marine Centre of HLSCC.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Competencies 

• Ability to deliver STCW courses.
• Excellent understanding and knowledge of safety cultures within the maritime environment.
• Excellent understanding of safety management systems including the health and safety procedures relating to the maritime training environment.

Qualifications &  Experience

• At least 3 years of seamanship on a merchant or naval military vessel in a minimum position of Chief Mate.
  • Marine engineering on a merchant or naval vessel.
  • STCW Advanced Firefighting certification.
  • RYA approved shore based and or practical instructor.
  • Qualified to deliver or assess STCW basic safety training per Annex C of the MNTB Guidelines (MCA Approval)
  • Prior experience as a trainer/instructor.
