AND PUBLIC RELATIONS (CONTRACT)

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Manager, Corporate Communication and Public Relations (Contract) is required to develop, implement, direct and evaluate PATT’s communications strategies including public relations, website content and the SBU’s identity/image programmes. Duties include planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the work of the Public Relations Department.

The incumbent acts as liaison between the organization and the general public providing information about policies procedures, services etc. He/she will also be tasked with managing media relations for the organization which may include developing press releases or pitching stories to media houses in an effort to get coverage on a particular issue or topic.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans, organizes, directs and coordinates the work of the staff engaged in the provision of Communications and Public Relations
  • Facilitates workforce effectiveness by setting performance standards for monitoring the output of junior employees
  • Develops and trains staff in the creation and implementation of crisis and issues communications plans
  • Develops and implements annual communications plans and programmes as approved by the General Manager/CEO
  • Directs and participates in the preparation of the budgetary estimates of the Department and ensures that expenditure is in keeping with financial and procurement guidelines
  • Prepares the more complex and sensitive briefs, media releases, advertisements, presentations and speeches as may be required
  • Creates content for the PATT’s website and social media accounts
  • Conducts market research on a continuous basis to ensure the development and implementation of pro-active communication strategies for the optimum return to the SBU.
  • Develops and implements public relations campaigns to build support for the organization’s mission or initiatives
  • Coordinates with other Departments within the organization to develop plans for events such as press conferences, town meetings etc.
  • Establishes and builds relationships with key stakeholders to encourage public support for the organization’s activities
  • Formulates policies, procedures, systems and guidelines that support the Communications and Public function in the SBUs and ensures compliance
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations on new business opportunities to facilitate the PATT’s viability and diversification into new income earning areas.
  • Develops and implements appropriate communications with private sector groups, government ministries, international shipping associations and port bodies for the furtherance of the PATT’s marketing initiatives.
  • Prepares monthly and ad hoc special reports as required for the General Management/Board of the Port Authority.
  • Prepares reports on public opinion surveys, focus groups and other research activities designed to measure public attitudes on topics relevant to the organization’s mission
  • Contributes to the development of and provides oversight for customer relationships by maintaining constant dialogue, monitoring evolving needs as well as developing mechanisms for early detection of customer dissatisfaction
  • Performs any other related duties as may be assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Extensive knowledge of media issues, social marketing theory and practice and communications strategies
  • Extensive knowledge of marketing, public relations, advertising, promotion and other marketing communication methods
  • Knowledge of quality customer service techniques
  • Knowledge of developing and managing budgets
  • Knowledge of project management
  • Possess strong communication skills to convey verbal messages to the public and other stakeholders
  • Skill in establishing and managing key stakeholder relationships
  • Skill in negotiations/conflict resolution
  • Ability to think strategically and display sound critical thinking/analytical skills
  • Ability to craft and implement communications and public relations plans/programmes
  • Ability to write press releases, social media posts, briefs, Notes etc.
  • Ability to practice active listening
  • Proven ability to supervise a diverse group of professional and non-professional staff
  • Ability to problem solve and work independently in a changing and multitasking environment with numerous deadlines

MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING AND WORKING EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Corporate Communications or related discipline from an accredited academic institution
  • Master’s Degree in Corporate Communications or related discipline from an accredited academic institution 
  • Evidence of specialized training in customer service
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience working in a corporate communications environment with at least three (3) years in a managerial role.
  • Any other equivalent combination of qualifications, training and working experience will be considered
