The Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring the hospital’s physical infrastructure, equipment, and systems are properly maintained to support a safe, sanitary, and efficient healthcare environment and also ensure the safe functioning of the non-clinical facilities.

 Responsibilities:

  1. Identify and fix electrical, plumbing, lighting and mechanical problems immediately to prevent frequency of downtime in clinical facilities and non-clinical facilities.
  2. Perform scheduled inspections and servicing of hospital equipment including wheelchairs, stretchers, HVAC systems, generators, and fire safety systems.
  3. Follow all safety standards and hospital protocols when performing maintenance tasks.
  4. Carry out carpentry, painting, fixing of drywall, and structural repairs to keep facilities in good condition.
  5. Respond quickly to urgent maintenance requests such as leaks, electrical failures, or equipment breakdowns and ensure patient care is not disrupted.
  6. Join the maintenance team on facility projects, including build-outs, renovations, electrical upgrades, plumbing installations, and HVAC improvements.
  7. Maintain and repair hospital machinery and equipment, lighting fixtures, air conditioning units, generators, and refrigeration systems.
  8. Complete work order for general repairs such as replacing ceilings and floor tiles, patching drywall, fixing doors and locks, painting and other repairs including carpentry
  9. Assist with installation of new equipment when required.
  10. Complete work orders, keep and maintain accurate logs, and inventory reports.
  11. Document all maintenance activities for regulatory compliance and audits.
  12. Track preventive maintenance schedules and report any failures and recurring issues.
  13. Assist in projects and the timely completion of projects.
  14. Liaise with external contractors for specialized repairs when necessary.
  15. Work closely with other departments to coordinate maintenance activities
  16. Respond quickly to facility-related emergencies including, but not limited to leaks, broken furniture and equipment, utility failures or fire alarms.
  17. Monitor and maintain the piping and alarms for oxygen and medical air
  18. Ensure all maintenance work complies with the Building Code of Jamaica, hospital safety protocols, and infection control standards.

Requirements:

  1. Minimum: Vocational training in Electrical Installation, Plumbing, Woodwork/Carpentry or Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HEART/NSTA Trust or NCTVET Level 2/3).
  2. Knowledge of OSHA and other Environmental Regulations
  3. 3+ years' experience in Maintenance.

Conditions Related to Job

  1. Lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders, walking distances and walking or standing for long periods/hours
  2. Working on weekends, beyond normal working hours and minimally on public holidays
  3. Using sharp or pointed objects/equipment/simple machinery/power tools
  4. Travelling to different locations
