POSITION PROFILE:

 JOB TITLE: Microbiology Technician

REPORTS TO: Microbiology Supervisor

DEPARTMENT: Quality Assurance

DIVISION: Manufacturing

 

Position Summary:

To ensure that all Raw Materials which are used in the manufacture of the product, Finished Products and process equipment are tested microbiologically and that the relevant related information is conveyed to all parties involved.

General duties and responsibilities:

 

 

  1. To sample and test all post sanitation equipment in both the Bottling Hall and Tetra Pak plants in order to determine the microbial load. Tests are conducted on the process equipment as follows: **Swabs:  i. Syrup Room Syrup Tanks and Juice Tanks – Bottling Hall, ii.The Balance Tank (Line # 2) – Bottling Hall, iii. The funnel and Cascade on the Canned Fruta Line – Bottling Hall, v.The simple syrup tank, concentrate tank and juice tanks – Tetra Pak plant. **Rinse water from the filler valves after sanitation to determine the Microbial load on the filler - bottling hall                
  1. Sample and test all Ingredients / Raw Materials which are used in the manufacture of the product such as Raw and Treated Water, Sugar, Simple syrup, Concentrates both at the Bottling Hall and Tetra Pak plants.
  1. Sample and test all Packaging Materials such as Bottles and Closures.
  1. Sample and test all materials, which are part of the work in progress if they are showing signs of Non – Conformance. For example, if concentrates are showing signs of spoilage and releasing odours then samples need to be taken immediately and tested for Microbes.
  1. Sample all finished products from all the lines. These would include Canned Fruta, Tetra Pak Fruta, and All Carbonated Beverages.
  1. Submit all samples received from Subsidiaries and trade for Microbiology testing. These would consist of samples from Saudi Arabia, St. Lucia and Local Trade.
  1. Ensure that all procedures are adhered to.
  1. Ensure that all Daily / Weekly tests / sampling are conducted and recorded and that results are also recorded and filed away in an orderly manner.
  1. Ensure that all relevant reports generating from results obtained are completed and submitted on a timely basis.
  1. Conduct stock checks of All Materials, Media and Equipment used in the laboratory and perform the relevant ordering of these when necessary.
  1. Compile and submit a weekly and monthly consumption report on all Materials / Media utilized in the laboratory and use this to assist with the reordering of stock.
  1. Conduct General Sanitation in the Laboratory on a weekly basis.
  1. Train new personnel to conduct the above duties efficiently and effectively.
  1. Maintain the lab’s external environment in a manner that is acceptable to lab standards
  1. Effective and safe disposal of biohazard waste from the lab i.e. plates with bacteria, yeasts, moulds and contaminated products.
  1. Conduct “mini” experiments within the lab and be ably to effectively communicate the findings in an appropriate manner.
  1. Increased testing on finished products and raw materials i.e. shelf life testing, pinprick, problematic products, increased post sanitation testing.
  2. Ensure GMP and HSE practices are followed and to comply with all programs and policies established towards manufacturing a high quality, food safe product that conform to regulatory standards for our customers, both internal and external.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Microbiology Knowledge: Strong understanding of microbiology principles, including microbial growth, identification, and control.
  • Laboratory Techniques: Proficiency in laboratory techniques such as aseptic technique, microbial culturing, staining, and microscopy.
  • Quality Assurance: Understanding of quality assurance principles, including Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze data, interpret results, and troubleshoot problems.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision and accuracy are crucial in microbiology laboratory work.
  • Communication Skills: Clear communication is important for documenting procedures, reporting results, and collaborating with team members.
  • Computer Skills: Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and basic computer applications used for data analysis and reporting.

 Minimum Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or related field. 
  • Two (2) years related work experience.
  • Training and Certification in the Food Manufacturing Industry will be an asset.
