Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Sub-regional Office for the Caribbean (SROC), based in Jamaica, and the direct supervision of the International Operations Manager, the Intern will provide valuable support to the SROC’s day-to-day technology operations. This role focuses on strengthening ICT service delivery by assisting with basic technical support, system maintenance, and the use of digital tools that enable effective programme and operational work.
The Intern will play a hands-on role in supporting staff with IT-related needs, helping to troubleshoot minor issues, maintain equipment and inventory records, and contribute to improving digital workflows across the office. Job Purpose: The ICT Intern will support the effective delivery of information and communication technology services within the office by assisting with day-to-day IT operations and user support. The role is designed to provide hands-on learning while contributing to the smooth functioning of systems, tools, and equipment that enable programme and operational activities.
Working under the guidance of the ICT/Procurement Associate and the overall supervision of the International Operations Manager, the ICT Intern will help troubleshoot basic technical issues, support system updates, maintain simple records, and assist staff in using digital platforms. The position offers a practical opportunity to understand how ICT supports organizational efficiency and programme implementation within UNFPA, resulting in improved understanding of the intern in ICT arrangements in UN set up.
Scope of work/Main tasks and responsibilities, et al
You would be responsible for:
- Installs application systems software and hardware according to specifications, configures and assists in testing and commissioning collaboration and telecommunication equipment.
- Monitors, maintains and performs the daily operations of telecommunication systems, Print/Scan services and equipment.
- Conducts on-going analysis and troubleshooting of equipment malfunctions, ensures proper operations and maintains equipment inventory to meet operational needs of the office.
- Provides technical support on relevant hardware and software systems applications in the assigned area.
- Provides support in the maintenance of customized application software systems; works with ICT/Procurement Associate on the definition and specification of requirements; builds, tests and modifies prototype application software based on detailed instructions; installs and maintains software systems.
- Performs ongoing reviews with users and developers and responds to requirements; requests, implements, provides operational support and maintains various applications.
- Maintains regular contact with users and technical staff and provides support as required.
- Support end-user hardware from procurement, deployment, maintenance, asset management through to disposal.
- Assist support to all internal business applications and other in-house developed applications
- Assist on backing on all business application support
- Work closely with other team members and the consultants to ensure that appropriate procedures are set up to identify user requirements
- Support and implement activities related to UNFPA’s Governance, Risk, Compliance and Reporting function.
- Carry out any other duties as may be required by the International Operations Manager.
Qualifications and Experience
Education:
- Be enrolled in a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent) and have completed one full academic year in one or more of the following disciplines: Computer Science, IT or other relevant courses.
- Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as master’s programme or higher);
- Have recently graduated with a university degree as defined above and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;
- Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional trainee programme and undertake the internship as part of this programme.
Knowledge and Experience:
A progressively responsible experience in ICT technical support in an customer-focussed organisation, where demonstrated experience in the below key areas, with the understanding that these experiences may overlap is required:
- At least two (2) years of hands-on experience in PC software, hardware support and network technical support experience.
- At least two (2) years of hands-on experience with Microsoft Infrastructure: Windows Server 2012, Active Directory, File Server, Print server.
- At least two (2) years of hands-on experience in cloud enabling technologies, particularly related to Google.
- Strong interpersonal skills and capability to develop and maintain broad diversified partnerships is required.
- Professional written and spoken presentation skills, including for the development of reports, presentations, and the ability to synthesize complex supply chain documents for both technical and non-technical audiences is required.
- Experience working in a matrix organizational structure is an asset.
- Hands-on experience with voice and video communication systems is an asset.
Languages:
- Demonstrate written and spoken proficiency in English is required (reading, writing, speaking). Working knowledge of another local or official UN language is desirable.
