The Legal Officer in reporting to the Legal Manager will assist with monitoring the legality of insurance transactions, settlement of claims, reviewing court decisions and recommends changes in wording of insurance policies to conform with law or to protect the company from unwarranted claims.

Principal Responsibilities

 

  • Provide legal opinions, advice, and guidance to the Claims Department.
  • Ensure adequacy of reserves on all legal files.
  • Review and comment on assigned files being handled by external attorneys as required.
  • Negotiate Claims settlement on a timely basis.
  • Ensure that the company is represented at all Mediation, Case Management conferences, Pre-Trial, and Trial as required.
  • File and defend proceedings on behalf of the Company and its insureds where required.
  • Optimize the use of technology to effectively manage claims with a legal overture.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly reports on the status of all active legal matters.
  • Advise the Management on a timely basis of all matters that may likely affect the company’s reputation and have a material impact on the company’s financial position.
  • Assist in the development of training material to address areas of deficiency specifically as it relates to claims management and legal issues.
  • Continue to increase knowledge through internal and external educational programs.
  • Build a supportive, team-orientated environment for the staff through embodying a sense of empowerment, demonstrating positive thinking and establishing common goals and inter-dependence with the employees.
  • Prioritize customer service so that it remains a part of the functioning of the Department.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Competencies and Know-How

 

Functional competencies

  • Working knowledge of all Classes of Insurance and Reinsurance.
  • Working knowledge of the Underwriting Guidelines, the Company's Reinsurance Treaties and the scope of cover provided by all the Company's policies of insurance
  • Working knowledge of the Laws of Jamaica and any other territory in which the Company is doing business as it relates to Insurance.
  • Ability to make quick and responsible decisions.
  • Ability to display tact, diplomacy, and negotiation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Analytical and forecasting skills.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience 

 

  • A Law Degree
  • Certificate of Legal Education
  • Minimum of 2 year’s experience as an Attorney-at-law with litigation experience
