JOB TITLE: Legal Advisor

The Legal Advisor is a member of the Commission’s management team. The officer holder is responsible for advising the Commission, the Managing Director, and the Board of Commissioners on legal matters including, but not limited to, the development and interpretation of legislation, initiating or responding to litigation, taking enforcement actions, and responding to complaints. The Legal Advisor is also responsible for the regulation of insolvency practitioners, managing cooperation with international partners, coordinating with external counsel and relevant consultants, and providing general policy advice.
The Legal Advisor supervises a team and manages the work of the Legal Unit.
The Legal Advisor will be located at the Commission's Providenciales Offices; however, the officer may be required to work from the Commission's Grand Turk office, and to undertake international travels for work or training.
This position requires that the job holder possess at a minimum:
i) An LLB or Juris Doctor in law or its equivalent
ii) A Legal Profession Certificate or its equivalent, and
iii) At least seven years post qualification experience
Post Qualification Experience should include:
i) Drafting of contracts, policies, and memoranda of understanding
ii) Drafting of legislation and instructions to Government Agencies, consultants and other service providers
iii) Interpreting commercial and financial services legislation
iv) Management and supervision of Legal Officer(s) and administrative staff
The Legal Advisor should, at a minimum:
i) have a sound knowledge of all relevant legislation, regulations, codes, guidelines, and similar directions in effect in the Turks and Caicos Islands;
ii) be able to interpret and apply complex rules and regulations;
iii) be able to utilise Justis, Lexis Nexis, Thomas Reuters, or another comparable legal research platform;
iv) be able to prioritise and manage multiple projects and initiatives;
v) have the highest level of confidentiality and ethical standards;
vi) be able to work independently and under pressure, to manage multiple concurrent tasks and responsibilities, and to deal with changing priorities;
vii) have excellent research, analytical, writing, and communication skills;
viii) be able to work collaboratively with different teams and stakeholders; and
ix) be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite of products.

This job is satisfactorily performed when:
i) Advice on legal matters reflects sound knowledge of relevant laws and regulations
ii) Timely and comprehensive recommendations are developed to address identified deficiencies in local laws and regulations
iii) Legal and Reputational risks are low or have been mitigated.
iv) Reports are produced within stipulated deadlines
v) Professional work ethics and integrity are maintained
