LIGTHOUSE ATTENDANT 

Applications are invited for the position of LIGHTHOUSE ATTENDANT.

SALARY

$1,320,117.25 per annum

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for operating the lighthouse navigation lights so that mariners are effectively guided in all weather conditions. The incumbent must also keep the lighthouse environs in a clean and presentable condition and maintain constant communication with Harbours on all matters relating to the lighthouse and its environs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Carry out those duties required to ensure the lighthouse is operable at all times, including

-      Ensuring all machinery and batteries are in operable condition

-      Requesting stores items including fuel, oil and bulbs for use on equipment and lighthouse

-      Keeps frequent observation of lighthouse tower light to ensure that timing is maintained for light to come on and go off

• Inspect the facility; perform daily maintenance tasks (housekeeping, gardening/lawn care)
• Repair things that become damaged or worn out, including plumbing, electrical and carpentry
• Carry out routine and non-routine maintenance projects/activities as directed
• Conduct weekly inspection of the premises and infrastructure to identify potential hazards and problems so that these can be rectified before deterioration causes greater harm/damage, and to determine effectiveness of safety
• Keep frequent observation of lighthouse tower light to ensure that timing is maintained for light to come on and go off
• Maintain inventory of the assets of the facilities

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Technical school graduate/HEART Level I/NVQJ General Construction
• Two (2) years’ related working experience
• Hands on experience in solar power operations and radio/telephone communication is an asset

DESIREABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

• Basic electrical including the process of the flow of electrical current
• Basic maintenance of mechanical equipment
• Basic building maintenance (cleaning, painting, repairing)
• Assess malfunctioning lighting and communication systems 
• Work on own initiative
• Creatively think through and resolve problems that arise
• Maintenance safety practices
• Solar powered system is an asset
• VHF/UHF radio and telephone communication is an asset
