Banksman/Signaller

The Banksman/Signaller is responsible for giving signals to assigned Equipment Operator. The Banksman/Signaller controls the lifting of routine and simple loads. This includes the travelling and laydown of the load and lifts that are out of the line of vision of the crane operato

Roles & Responsibilities

General

The Banksman/Signaller must:

• Ensure that the outriggers are fully extended and locked

• Ensure that he is clearly and easily identifiable from other personnel by wearing a Hi-

visibility headcover/hat, or another means which is clearly marked to indicate that he is the authorized Banksman/Signaller. The method of identification used, must be recognized and agreed by all parties prior to the commencement of lifting operation and as discussed at the toolbox talk

• Not touch the load while the load is suspended. He must stand back from the load being handled and be in a prominent position where he has a good view of the lifting activities

• Remain in communication with the load handlers, forklift/crane operator at all times and ensure that no persons in the team are out of sight of himself and the forklift/crane operator at the same time

• Visualize various positions of the load before actual lift

• Understanding risks (e.g., blind spots) and how to manage these effectively

• Recommending and laying out safe, on-site traffic systems.

• Ensure that, where appropriate, tag lines are fitted and controlled by load handlers

• Ensure that slings are not used at angles greater than that identified in the lifting plan. Preferred included angle of slings with respect to load is 90 degrees (maximum). If this angle Is to be exceeded (e.g. to reduce height), advice must be sought from an appropriate competent person, and the lift plan changed

• Ensure that all links, rings, and shackles locate and seat in the hooks freely

• Monitor and ensure that all personnel within the task area are properly dressed, Hi- Visibility clothing, hard hats, gloves, safety glasses (where required), and safety boots/shoes with rubber soles are preferred

• Assist in the co-ordination and processing of all crane lifting operations

• Responsible for the correct storage and care of lifting equipment

Minimum Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours)

• NSL Banksman/Slinger

• 5 CXC passes including Mathematics and English

• Team Player

• People Skills

• Knowing personal limitations regarding work skills and knowledge

• Previous experience working on ASCO sites will be an asset.

• Clean Certificate of Character

Technical Competencies

• NSL Banksman/Slinger Competency Assessment

• Knowledge of regional legislation

• Knowledge of lifting operations planning.

HSEQ

• In partnership with the HSE department, ensure the continuous improvement of safety and environmental performance and compliance to all laws, regulations and industry standards/codes.

• Reports all incidents or breaches of policy or regulations to the line manager.

• Fully endorse the ASCO ‘Stop the Job’ policy and commitment to proactive intervention where an unsafe act or condition is observed.

• Adherence to the ASCO’s integrated management system ensuring document control and improvements to key processes is maintained.

• Ensure all work is carried out in a safe manner, always complies with HSEQ procedures, GLP, working instructions and safety standards.

• Act as Emergency Warden when necessary
