The incumbent is expected to lead a dynamic team of Business Development Underwriters, providing an unparalleled level of service to the external brokering community.

KEY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical underwriting support for all classes of business in keeping with The Beacon’s guidelines and approved Limits of Authority.
  • To provide timely sign off on all Policy and other Documents as required for the Unit
  • Continuously ensure compliance with all The Beacon’s guidelines, manuals, corporate policies and SOPs.
  • Support in the formulation & implementation of initiatives aimed at increasing new business
  • Assist in the development of operational plans and/or budgets in conjunction with Manager or Division Head
  • Consistently identify new opportunities for cross -selling and up-selling the company’s products across the Broker Unit.
  • To assist in the formulation, development and implementation of special projects to drive increased revenues for the Broker Unit.
  • To Supervise and mentor BDUs daily including but not limited to assigned targets and monitoring of performance, providing constructive feedback to BDUs as required to ensure continuous growth and development, orient and train BDUs as required, evaluate staff performance, coaching and disciplining BDU’s where necessary.
  • Prepare monthly and weekly reports as required.
  • Conduct interval audits for compliance with agreed company policies and procedures
  • Timely response to Broker and customer queries and requests.
  • Ensure proper management of all correspondence, tasks, queries and customer complaints within the Unit
  • Provide technical advice to Customers, Brokers and Underwriters when necessary.
  • Ensure the accuracy and efficiency of all entries made on the operating system.
  • Effectively work with Receivables Manager and Senior Supervisor to review Debtors, Queries and Unallocated Premiums.
  • Supervise the time and attendance of staff members.
  • Conduct Performance evaluations.
  • Set and monitor the achievement of SMART goals and initiatives within the Division  
  • Manage staff members in line with company policies and procedures
  • Create performance goals, training plans and professional development plans for staff members
  • Conduct monthly check-ins with team members to ensure they are meeting set goals within timelines.
  • Ensure accurate and efficient data entry on Company’s operating system by Underwriters.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for relevant learning and development programmes.
  • Create and conduct learning and development programmes and evaluations for assigned team members.

KEY TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of the core principles of insurance and how this is applied on a day-to-day basis.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of the range of insurance products and services available in the market and how that knowledge can be used to meet client needs.
  • Considerable knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements and how to meet these on a day-to-day basis. It is also about understanding the concept of operational risk and how this is controlled within organizations.
  • Represents an individual’s knowledge of the underwriting process.
  • Represents an individual’s knowledge of how claims should be handled and managed.

KEY JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the factors that affect the performance of an Underwriting portfolio and how risk exposure can be monitored and controlled.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the information gathering process, the factors that affect the acceptance and underwriting of risks
  • Knowledge and understanding of Underwriting processes and procedures which is needed for new risks, alterations, renewals and/or cancellations to be processed in an accurate and timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of five (5) CXC passes including Math and English (No less than a grade 2)
  • Certificate in CII Cert/AINS or equivalent
  • Minimum 5-8 years technical experience
  • Must have a minimum of 1-3 years Supervisory/People Manager experience
