TEMPORARY MULTI-PURPOSE SEAMAN

 

The Port Authority of Jamaica wishes to recruit two (2) TEMPORARY MULTI-PURPOSE SEAMEN in the Habours Division.

 

SALARY SCALE- $ 1,900,694.77 - $ 2,283,572.25 per annum.

JOB SUMMARY

The incumbent(s) will be required to operate as a Seaman on the workboats, buoy tender and other marine vessels in all types of weather conditions and must be able to facilitate deck maintenance on vessels, navigational aids and ports.

 

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCEICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Ratings forming part of a Navigational Watch certificate (Regulation 11/4)
  • Valid First Aid at Sea, Survival & Rescue and Fire Fighting certificates PLUS
    • At least 1 year's working experience on a vessel operating internationally OR
    • 3 years working on boats locally.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIESNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • Sound knowledge of Kingston Harbour and other ports around the island
  • Working knowledge of navigational charts and the use navigational instruments
  • Basic engine operation and maintenance including checking fuel, lube oil and coolant levels and ensuring the safety and seaworthiness of vessels.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate as a Seaman on marine vessels.
  • Carry out maintenance of buoys and beacons and other navigational aids in the Kingston Harbour and out ports.
  • Service and maintain navigational aids throughout the island and offshore, ensuring safe working practices in the execution of these activities and the preservation of the marine environment to the best extent possible.
  • Clean marine growth and other foreign matter form the buoys, beacons, and boats.
  • Carry out daily maintenance of vessels including chipping and painting.
  • Carry out repair work on wooden, steel and fiberglass vessels.
  • Assists with ensuring wellbeing and safety of passengers, crew and equipment on the vessel being operated.
  • Assist the light attendants/electricians in servicing aids to navigation lights.
  • Assist with sand blasting of buoys and vessels.
  • Report all accidents/incidents and defects involving the boats.
