This position is responsible for developing and implementing effective short and long term policies and procedures to ensure continuous improvement of safety and occupational health standards and practices in the company.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for developing and implementing effective short and long term policies and procedures to ensure continuous   improvement of safety and occupational health standards and practices in the company.  This involves scheduled and sporadic auditing of operations, monitoring and advising on sound environmental practices and conducting workshops/ training programmes to support the objectives.

ELEMENTS OF MAJOR DUTIES

  1. Orients all new employees regarding the company’s safety policies and procedures with respect to safety of all employees and equipment.
  2. Develops and implements training designed to develop the safety awareness of employees at all levels of the organization.
  3. Produces articles on safety issues for in-house circulation.
  4. Evaluates the effectiveness of programmes in place and recommends changes to ensure achievement of the Company’s sector objectives.
  5. Schedules periodic fire drills and safety and environmental awareness courses.
  6. Assists in conducting monthly safety meetings.
  7. Coordinates the company’s disaster preparedness programmes at the various locations and also in response to a national disaster.
  8. Participates on accident investigation committees and recommends solutions where necessary.
  9. Assists with the development of procedures and systems for the prevention of all accidents.

EDUCATION/SPECIALIZED TECHNIQUES

  1. Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering or equivalent.
  2. Degree in Occupational, Health & Safety would be an asset
  3. Diploma/certificate in Industrial Safety technology.
  4. Well-developed interpersonal and counseling skills.
  5. Excellent communication, time management and analytical skills.

EXPERIENCE/LEARNED DISCIPLINE 

  1. A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a similar position.
  2. Knowledge of JPS’s and statutory requirements related to safety controls.
  3. Knowledge of environmental hazards specific to the company’s operations
  4. Experience and knowledge with emergency medical response techniques (First Aid/CPR).
  5. Experience in the development and delivery of safety   and environmental protection training programmes.
  6. Knowledge of ISO Management Systems would be an asset
