DEMOGRAPHER

 

              The Planning Institute of Jamaica is seeking to identify a suitably qualified candidate to fill the position of 

              Demographer, in the Social Policy, Planning and Research Division.

 

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director, Population and Health, the incumbent will have the responsibility to provide technical and policy advice for national and sectoral population policy and planning, and provide demographic inputs for project and programme development, monitoring and evaluation.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and facilitate the development, coordination, and evaluation of the national population and development policies, programmes and plans;
  • Collect, compute, analyse and disseminate demographic data; 
  • Prepare policy research papers in areas relating to population policy, in the context of sustainable development.
  • Provide demographic and population and development advice to national, regional and global communities and working groups.
  • Provide demographic research and information services, including contribution to the production of publications
  • Provide technical advice and inputs for the integration of demographic imperatives in the preparation of other social and environmental policies, plans and programmes
  • Represent the PIOJ/government at national, regional and global meetings in population and related socio-economic development areas

 

Qualification and Experience Required

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Demography or Master of Science Degree in Sociology specialising in Demography and related disciplines
  • At minimum three (3) years’ experience with a combination of skills in the Social Sciences to include demography and development issues

 

Knowledge/ Skills/Attributes

  • Excellent knowledge and use of SPSS, STATA, or other statistical software
  • Ability to apply demographic techniques and research methods
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Excellent technical writing, public speaking and presentation skills
