VACANCY

 

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Transplant Nephrologist for the National Organ Transplant Unit (NOTU) at the North-Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA).

 

TRANSPLANT NEPHROLOGIST (NOTU)

 

The Transplant Nephrologist will be responsible for achieving the goals of the Unit which is ensuring at least 24 renal transplants for the first 2 years and an increase of twenty percent (20%) annually thereafter.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates End Stage Renal Disease patients to gauge their suitability for Renal Transplantation.
  • To perform assigned duties by the Medical Director or any other persons delegated by the Authority.
  • Incorporates all hospitals to all Nephrologists in Trinidad and Tobago.  Works with all Nephrologists so that all patients have access to renal transplant.
  • Works with all Intensive Care Units and Casualty departments of all hospitals so as to acquire all maximum decrease donor kidneys.
  • Following authorization, makes the public aware, through the press, television, place of work, that they can be potential donor.
  • Works with coroner in order to obtain deceased donor kidney.
  • Evaluates potential living donor candidates to determine their suitability to be donors.
  • Establishes and co-chair multi-disciplinary committees to determine transplant schedules for the Unit.
  • Liaises with departments e.g. Pharmacy, Laboratory, Cardiology to ensure that appropriate staff, reagents and consumables are in place in order that Kidney transplants can be performed at all times and to make the relevant notification and application to the Head of his/her Department if shortcomings/deficiencies are noted.
  • Responsible for In-hospital care of Renal Transplant Patients (Donor/Recipients) in the pre-and post-transplant period.
  • Provides consultation on, in-patients with functioning or failing transplants when hospitalized for non-transplant related issues.
  • Responsible for the short and long term follow up of Recipients with a functioning Kidney Transplant.
  • Serves as the liaison between the Programme, Referral Institutions and relevant support groups e.g. The Kidney Recipient Support Group of Trinidad and Tobago to promote the conduct of Kidney Transplantation.
  • Assists in the promotion of outreach Deceased and Living Donor programme.
  • Participates in Quality, Selection and Donor Traceability Committees.
  • Collaborates with the Transplant Surgeon responsible for the Staff Appraisals in the Unit.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work with colleagues, have effective communication and leadership skills to further develop a Transplant Referral Centre and increase new patient appointments.
  • Designs and carries out audits of the Unit annually as well as quality improvement projects.

Minimum Qualifications, Requirements and Experience:

  • Postgraduate Degree in the appropriate specialisation.
  • Certified Nephrologist; if certification in Transplant Nephrology is not available, appropriate experience in kidney transplant would be considered.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of Postgraduate experience/training in the area of specialisation.
  • Qualifications from an approved institution registered with the Medical Board of Trinidad & Tobago.
  • Where sub-specialisation is indicated or required i.e. Nephrology etc., proficiency in this area should be indicated during the Postgraduate training period.
  • Any other combination of qualifications, training and experience.

 

*Certificates acquired at foreign universities MUST be supported by certified transcripts as well as evidence that the completed programme is accredited in Trinidad and Tobago.
