The purpose of this job is to produce and assemble glasses to the customers specifications within a reasonable time frame.

Principal tasks/Responsibilities

 This job is primarily responsible for:

  • Interpretation of computer-generated worksheet
  • Interpretation of lens supplied vs work sheet requirement.
  • Layout of lenses for surfacing. 
  • Taping, blocking and deblocking of lenses. 
  • Operate Lens Generator.
  • Polishing and cleaning of lenses. 
  • Checking of PD and Rx measurements. 
  • Tinting and coating of lenses.
  • Analyze and layout lenses for edging. Edging of lenses. 
  • Fitting and inserting lenses into frames.
  • Adjustments, repairs, monitor the equipment to ensure that it is always functioning optimally.

Performance Standards

This job is considered to be performed satisfactorily when:

  • Customer’s requests are produced accurately, with minimal breakage and within an acceptable time frame.
  • All machinery is properly monitored to ensure minimal lapses in production.
  • Work area is always kept clean.

Key competencies required

  • Possess a good understanding of light, refraction, the anatomy of the eye.
  • Attentiveness to detail.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems.
  • Hands-on experience in an optical environment is an asset.
