The conducting of repairs on light and heavy vehicles without supervision, the ability to conduct major and minor repairs on light and heavy vehicles inclusive of engine, chassis, body and other related diagnostics as well as safety check and repairs on these vehicles.

Job Summary:

 The Automotive Technician 3 is the most senior technical position in the technical grade of the service department.   This individual is considered sufficiently skilled to perform with a high level of proficiency without supervision.   This Technician must have the requisite knowledge of and be able to use tools and equipment to enhance their work.  They are required to be able to conduct major and minor repairs on light and heavy vehicles such as body work, chassis and engine repairs minor work such as routine maintenance, diagnosing issues and performing safety checks.     

 Key Duties & Responsibilities:

 This individual should be able to work on light vehicles and or trucks and works independently within established procedures associated with their specialization.   Auto Tech 3s are required to be aware of and guided by Occupational Health requirements/guidelines in conducting their work.   Duties and responsibilities are inclusive of any combination of the following tasks:

  1. Proficient examination of vehicles to determine defects and or deficiencies according to manufacturer’s specifications or mechanism of damage  
  2. Conduct routine testing and adjusting of repaired automotive systems in line with manufacturers and industry safety specifications
  3. Conduct disassembly and rebuilding of engine, parts and other necessary technical systems according to manufacturer’s specifications and industry safety standards
  4. Conduct routine maintenance checks and repair accordingly
  5. Overhaul, repair, replace or conduct maintenance on light and heavy vehicles parts and accessories according (chassis, engine, transmission and or body)
  6. Perform high quality work in a fast-paced environment in accordance with the company/industry standards
  7. Be motivated to achieve productivity targets
  8. Be a team leader and role model for apprentices and lower level technicians in the workshop.
  9. Oversee and guide the work of apprentices and lower level technicians in the workshop.
  10. Participate diligently in  internal / external training to acquire additional knowledge and certification
  11. Be literate and able to comprehend and communicate information efficiently
  12. Operate vehicles in compliance with National Road Safety Regulations and company policy

 Routine Responsibilities:

 The types of work/repair performed by this individual may include but is not limited to:

  1. Periodic maintenance
  2. Use of diagnostic scan tool to diagnose the repair malfunctions
  3. Suspensions and steering repairs inclusive of wheel alignment , power steering columns and related electrical
  4. Cooling systems diagnosis and repairs inclusive of cooling fan, sensors and related electrical
  5. Fuel systems diagnosis and repairs inclusive of related electrical
  6. Brake system diagnosis and repair inclusive of ABS and related electrical
  7. Truck brake system – hydraulic with vacuum, air and accumulator systems
  8. Air brakes systems – if relevant
  9. Clutch overhaul including clutch power assist system
  10. Engine diagnosis and overhaul – gas and diesel
  11. Manual transmission diagnosis and overhaul
  12. Drive line, axle and different diagnosis and overhaul inclusive of related electrical
  13. Electrical repairs
  14. Air condition system service and repairs inclusive or related electrical
  15. Completion of all documentation in a neat timely manner

 Knowledge, Skills & Ability Requirements:

Must possess a good working knowledge of: -

  1. Good interpersonal, negotiating, critical thinking, communicative, diagnostic and problem solving skills
  2. Very good knowledge of engine, chassis, body and transmission parts of light and heavy vehicles, particulars, safety features and limitations
  3. Sound knowledge of road safety laws and regulations governing light and heavy motor vehicles
  4. Proficient use of Automotive hand and power tools
  5. Exhibit confidence, earn respect and garner support from a wide cross section of the technical, supervisory and managerial leadership of the organization
  6. Follow checklists and confer with customers to gain a better understanding of the vehicle’s problems discuss the work needed for future repairs

Must possess the skills & ability to: -

  1. Communicate effectively and efficiently with all customers and employees
  2. Review work orders and discuss any issues with supervisor/manager
  3. Direct/lead or coordinate any work given to repair light or heavy vehicles
  4. Plan work flows using charts, digital equipment and manuals
  5. Participate in and conduct cross training of other mechanical staff
  6. Maintain a clean work environment in alignment with HSE laws and regulations as well as maintain a professional appearance at all times

 Qualifications & Experience:

  1. Equivalent Technician’s Diploma in Auto and Diesel Systems (1 & 2)
  2. Electrical Training
  3. Diagnosis and Auto Air Condition
  4. Hybrid Training
  5. Hydraulic Training
  6. Minimum ten (10) years highly specialized training and at least five (5) GCE O’ level or C.X.C. passes or equivalent.
  7. A valid Drivers Permit, Heavy T & Extra Heavy classes will be an asset
  8. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Computer Literacy, Microsoft Word and Excel (will be an asset)
