Maintenance Engineer

Transmission & Distribution

Leads, develops, and supports maintenance, refurbishment and reinforcement of electric transmission and distribution facilities and equipment within established guidelines using sound asset management, data and maintenance strategies.

Manages professional employees and/or supervisors of maintenance delivery teams. Has accountability for the performance and results of the teams within own discipline or function. Adapts departmental strategies, plans and priorities to address resource, work and operational challenges aligned with company objectives.

Decisions and problem-solving are guided by standards, policies, procedures and business objectives; receives guidance and oversight from director and liaises cross-functionally with other departments. Provides technical guidance to employees, colleagues and/or customers.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop maintenance strategies based on asset lifecycle costs, performance and operational reliability
  • Establish and drive performance targets for asset maintenance, refurbishment and grid reinforcement works
  • Identify, prioritize and implement management strategies that facilitate the delivery of valued added work across the Transmission, Distribution and Retail Group (TD&R Group)
  • Manage and mine appropriate data to drive asset maintenance, refurbishment and grid reinforcement works
  • Ensure personnel effectively identify and track critical materials, working in conjunction with procurement
  • Work cross functionally to improve the operational flexibility and reliability of the grid system (as an example, developing policies, standards, specifications and codes of practice)
  • Be Authorised to SAP 2 Level
  • Establish and maintain an environment of continuous improvement
  • Identify training and development needs for personnel that best align with present and future work requirements
  • Prepare annual department budget and take decisions to ensure compliance with approved budget
  • Establish and manage external contracts that help meet core operational objectives
  • Work cross-functionally, contributing to grid system planning to meet evolving operational requirements
  • Provide managerial support that ensures Bermuda’s and BELCO’s health, safety and environmental rules and regulations are adhered to.
  • Keep abreast of emerging tools, techniques. technologies and industry best practices
  • Establish, maintain and improve processes that drive efficiency and operational reliability

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years experience planning and managing maintenance works in an electric utility environment
  • Understanding of asset management strategies and their application to electricity transmission and distribution
  • Prior experience with grid safety, maintenance standards and electric utility operations
  • 2 or more years of experience in a management or supervisory role preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong oral and written communications skills and the ability to interact in a team based environment
  • Knowledge of electric utility and industry protocols and guidelines for safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain proficiency with new systems and software as technology evolves
  •  Experience with personal computers, Microsoft Office applications, and trade related software
  • Perform work in a team environment and provide direct support to other utility operational groups
  • Establish professional relationships and work effectively with other departments, utilities, consultants, and government agencies
  • Ability to manage personnel responsible for maintenance activities and other work
  • Must have strong analytical skills
  • Highly motivated self-starter
  • Proven multitasking skills
  • Ability to coach, motivate and mentor personnel in a changing industry
  • Experience with Incident Command System (ICS) for Hurricane and Crisis response.
