The Caribbean Maritime University (CMU), the only specialized maritime university in the English-speaking Caribbean, is inviting applications for STUDENT EXPERIENCE & INVOLVEMENT OFFICER (LEVEL 5).

 Job Purpose

The Student Experience and Involvement Officer will report to the Manager of Student Affairs and will support the Office of  Student Affairs in providing oversight, management and leadership for the discipline, safety and security of students on all campus; provide internship and job placement services to CMU students / graduates for requisite land-based work experience and full-time employment contributes to students’ wellbeing by promoting and supervising after-school extra-curricular activities; assist with access, selection, and assignment of students’  accommodations (off-campus) and maintenance standards; and direct responsibility of student discipline.  The incumbent will provide day to day operational execution and administrative management in alignment with the University’s short and long-range goals. 

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Supports in promoting diversity, inclusivity, and equality on CMU campuses. Ensuring that the CMU is a welcoming and inclusive place where all students feel like they belong and can thrive.
  • Organizes and analyzes student evaluations through on-line questionnaires, focus groups and other mechanisms deemed appropriate.
  • Supports students in developing student-led enhancement activities (i.e., mentoring, intercultural events, etc.)
  • Provides excellent customer service to all that interfaces with the Office of Student Affairs.
  • Provides student advocacy by ensuring students get the help and resources they need to engage in a positive learning experience.
  • Attends and contributes to School committees to discuss learning support issues.
  • Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promotes the University and its programmes by participating in germane events or meetings where apropos partnerships with industry and/or professional associations.
  • Supports in the establishment of operational policies and procedures to guide and instruct student engagement processes.
  • Provides protocol support and guidance for events and activities of the University and provide support for Alumni activities in partnership with Alumni Relations Coordinator.
  • Coordinates registration for eligible students into the Industry Awareness Programme.
  • Creates and presents pre- and post-workshops for students participating in academic internships.
  • Conducts site visits to current and potential internship sites to evaluate learning/work environments and determine suitability for the placement of students.
  • Improves student access to internship opportunities through employer development activities and collaboration with faculty
  • Creates and maintains accurate, electronic internship participation data, including service records and student performance.
  • Monitors and follows up on rotation of students in industry to foresee and resolve problems that may arise.

Performance Standards

  • Tasks satisfactorily completed as per targets in the Work and Operational Plans
  • High level of satisfaction experienced by staff, students and stakeholders.
  • Effective management of students’ welfare and grievance issues demonstrated
  • Satisfactory collaboration maintained with the CMU’s external contacts resulting in efficient linkages of all stakeholders in the system.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in administration in a higher education setting or related experience
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively provide career counselling and advise students.
  • Knowledge of local and international protocol would be an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications
