JOB SUMMARY:  

To manage, plan and develop epidemiologic and research programmes under the auspices

of the National Epidemiology and Research Unit (NERU) to ensure collection, analysis, and

interpretation of data about health effects and risks in TCI and disseminate this information

locally, regionally and internationally as appropriate to be utilized in particular to promote

evidence-informed decision making in health in TCI.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Coordinates disease surveillance activities to reliably collect relevant health status and health service data.
  2. Ensures analysis and interpretation of surveillance data and make recommendations regarding interventions such as implementation of prevention and control measures.
  3. Ensures preparation and disseminate monthly reports on health status indicators utilizing available epidemiological data.
  4. Leads and coordinates outbreak investigation activities.
  5. Prepares and disseminates communicable disease outbreak reports to the Ministry of Health and CAREC in a timely, manner as requested during the outbreak.
  6. Oversees all national health related research projects.
  7. Spearhead/conducts essential health research for TCI.
  8. Designs, conducts, and interprets epidemiologic studies.
  9. Analyzes, interprets and disseminates information about health effects and risks to inform policy and facilitate evidence informed decision making in health in TCI.
  10. Disseminates information locally, regionally and internationally as appropriate.
  11. Establishes and maintains a close working relationship with local, regional and international stakeholders as and funding agencies as appropriate.
  12. Manages daily operations of Unit.
  13. Supervises and instructs staff.
  14. Ensures budgetary compliance of Unit.
  15. Prepares grants to obtain extra-mural funding for health research.
  16. Participates/represents TCI in meetings/workshops/conferences e.g., health research and scientific meetings at local, regional and international levels.
  17. Spearheads mentorship and capacity building activities for NERU and MOHE personnel.
  18. Supervises internships and preceptorships in epidemiology and public health research for graduate students.
  19. Performs other relevant duties as may be assigned.
  20. Adheres to all Public Service rules and regulations

 

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

Qualifications: 

  • A Doctoral degree from an accredited university in an allied health discipline with dissertation in epidemiology followed by at least two years experience in the design, conduct and interpretation of epidemiologic studies - OR - a Master's degree from an accredited university with specialization and thesis in epidemiology followed by at least five years experience in the design, conduct, and interpretation of epidemiologic studies, including two years experience at the level of Epidemiologist.

OR

  • Physician with a Master's degree from an accredited university with specialization and thesis in epidemiology followed by at least three years experience in the design, conduct, and interpretation of epidemiologic studies, including two years experience at the level of Epidemiologist.
  • Training and credentials in health management desirable.

 

Experience:

The position requires eight (8) to ten (10) years experience in the field, of which three (3) to five (5) years are at the level of Epidemiologist.

In addition to the experience detailed in the section on qualifications, this position requires

the following:

  • Experience in design, conduct, and interpretation of epidemiologic studies.
  • Experience in outbreak investigation and report dissemination.
  • Experience in workshop/conference design and delivery.
  • Experience in managing on-going inter and intra agency professional relationships as well as with local, regional and international counterparts.
  • Mentoring and capacity building experience with junior staff and graduate students in Public health.
  • Proven/recognized leadership skills and abilities.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills in professional settings as evidenced by invitations to present at regional and international meetings.

 

 

SALARY: Grade 9.1 - $63,792.64 per annum plus allowances  

For persons recruited outside of the Turks & Caicos Islands a two-year extendable contract is offered. Other benefits in addition to basic salary include a Housing Allowance, End-of contract gratuity of 6%, return passages for a family of up to two children under the age of 18 years, freight cost and duty exemption on personal effects imported within six months of the appointment.
