   ACCOUNTING OFFICER

 

Purpose of position

  1. To provide accounting and reporting support to the Finance Department and to process transactions through the general ledger and the various sub-ledger systems.  
  1. Prepare daily bank reconciliations, maintenance of asset registers and sub-ledgers and assist with the preparation of management and other reports. 

 

Responsibilities will cover key areas including;

1. Reconcile bank, intercompany and broker accounts:

  • Monitor accounts statements, verify all entries and general ledger balances, and reconcile the account/statement entries
  • Ensure entries are cleared within the department’s stipulated timeframe.
  • Prepare invoices and follow up with collection in a timely manner

 2. Maintain registers, sub-ledgers and assigned schedules based on agreed standards

  • Ensure proper maintenance of the fixed asset register including:
    •  a) proper classification of assets,
    •  b) tagging of new assets
    • c)  retirement of assets, in accordance with the company’s fixed asset policy.
    • Reconcile assigned sub-ledgers to the respective G/L accounts, suppliers’ accounts and other reconciliation, assigned.

 3. Prepare reports and analyze general ledger accounts.

  • Prepare schedules for:
    • ALCO, Board, Audit Committee or other committee reports.
    • quarterly consolidated schedules
    • monthly financial statements and business unit reports
    • Assist in clearing of suspense accounts E.g., Manual draft account etc.

 4. Provide input to the annual budgeting exercise.

 5. Maintain approved internal control procedures:

  • Assist in preparation of statutory returns to ensuring accurate and timely filings.
  • Perform regular self-audit reviews as required.
  • Adhere to quality control guidelines established for the department, Bank/Securities Company policies, procedures and Limits of Authority.

 

Required Qualification, experience and key competencies

The successful candidate should have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Accounting/Management Studies and pursuing ACCA level 11 or CPA
  • Minimum of two (2) years post qualification experience in a regulated financial entity.
  • Ability to learn relevant mainframe applications.
  • Knowledge of general ledger application and sub-ledger systems
  • Ability to understand, interpret and carry out procedures and detailed instructions.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure to meet established timelines.
  • Effective communication and people skills and the ability to work effectively with others.
  • Working knowledge of PC applications (i.e., spreadsheets, word processing, graphics, etc.)
