Senior Power House and Boiler Operator - New Yarmouth Distillery

(Based in Clarendon, Jamaica)

The Company owns two distilleries: New Yarmouth Estate in Clarendon and Appleton Estate in St Elizabeth. Both distilleries account for approximately two-thirds of all spirits produced in Jamaica.

Position Summary

The role of Senior Power House and Boiler Operator involves the operation of the boiler, turbine and auxiliary equipment to generate steam for electricity and for process operation. The incumbent will be responsible for monitoring of air compressors, Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plant, water pumps and other auxiliary equipment associated with steam generation, as well as operating and monitoring of diesel generators for production of electricity.

Key Activities & Responsibilities

The incumbent will be performing the following duties and activities:

  • Start, operate and shutdown the following and other related equipment: Boilers, Turbine Alternator Sets,Diesel Plant and Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plant
  • Monitor operation and record log as necessary for equipment in use
  • Maintain constant inspection and do necessary adjustment from time to time
  • Clean fuel oil filters as necessary and ensure that the cleaning agent is always available
  • Maintain a reasonable degree of cleanliness of equipment and structures in the Power House
  • Ensure the smooth operation of the operating equipment to generate and distribute electricity
  • Identify and troubleshoot problems so that the necessary corrective action can be taken
  • Continuous, keen and timely observation of equipment
  • Operate water supply pumps
  • Operate fire hydrant generator
  • Ensure that the correct level of electrolyte is maintained in the diesel engine startup batteries
  • Carry out basic electrical repair activities on shift when electricians are not available
  • Maintain correct oil levels in turbine and diesel engine sumps and in compressor pressure tank
  • Maintain the correct operating conditions i.e. oil pressures, cooling water, diesel fuel tank level, domestic water yard pump and boiler feed water
  • Report any abnormality at the earliest time
  • Perform all duties and activities in a safe manner at all times

What Academic Achievements, Competencies and Experiences You Will Need

  • At minimum - Trade school/HEART-NTA graduate with electrical and or plant maintenance experience.
  • At least 4 years working experience with a minimum of 2 years as a Power House Operator
  • Training in Power Generation and Switch board operation
  • Strong team working skills to work collaboratively as a part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team
  • Good communication and leadership skills
  • Basic Computer competencies
  • Dexterity to fulfil the physical requirements of the job
  • Must be fully knowledgeable of work instructions, safety procedures for power generation equipment
