Job Purpose

The Barista / Junior Coffee Roaster is responsible learning the TFL coffee business from the ground up.  The position will work as a Barista as needed but also learn the coffee operations side of the business, including roasting and selling coffee and equipment.  Additionally, it is expected that this position will take on some of the training duties of the Coffee Expert.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Loading/unloading deliveries including green coffee
• Works closely with the Coffee Expert/Head Roaster to roast coffee bean to company standards.
• Roasts blend varieties of coffee to company specifications and standards.
• Provides general assistance to the Coffee Expert/Head Roaster around the roaster.
• Grinding and packing of roasted coffee in an organized manner.
• Applies bag labels and roasts dates to product carefully and with precision.
• Bagging and picking customer orders
• Dispatches orders for retail sales.
• Cleans and maintains the roastery equipment and work space.
• Participates in and learns all aspects of our coffee business
• Oversees and has knowledge of all aspects of coffee preparation techniques (Level 3 Barista)
• Works as a Barista in our outlets and restaurants
• Provides excellent customer service to our walk-in and telephone customers
• Operate a computer-based hospitality micros system and perform basic arithmetic
• Arrange maintenance and repair of equipment
• May train staff in all aspects of coffee preparation techniques
• Performs regular coffee tasting (Cupping) ad quality controls.
• May be involved in sourcing and evaluating the raw product
• Assist the Coffee Expert/Head Roaster with purchasing decisions, communicating with supply chain to ensure timely and efficient shipping delivery, as well as gathering key information about coffees across language barriers and time differences.
• Undertakes roast training with a view to production roasting as required.
• Undertakes any additional duties as requested by the Coffee Expert/Head Coffee Roaster.

Qualifications

• Successful post-secondary educational experience
• Experience as a Barista with a reputable coffee company
• Strong interest and aptitude in coffee
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to train and educate staff about coffee
• Must be a team player, self-starter, responsible, honest, diligent, have a positive attitude, demonstrate good judgment and able to think quickly and clearly
• Ability to work well under pressure with a high attention to detail are essential
• Must be able to work with minimum supervision and is a self-starter
• Ability to work six days a week, be on your feet for long periods and lift 50 pounds
• Have flexible shift availabilities and commute between multiple Take Five Ltd. restaurant locations (public holidays, nights and weekends)
