Risk & Compliance Officer

The incumbent is responsible for the Credit Union’s risk management function by developing and performing on-going review of enterprise risk management policies and practices with a view to ensure that the Union fulfils all regulatory requirements. This position reports to the Board of Directors/General Manager on all areas of the Credit Union as well as recommending appropriate actions to ensure compliance and identify mitigation strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Develops programmes, policies and procedures relating to anti-money laundering & counter financing of terrorism regulations and the pending Credit Union bill.
  • Provides and implements appropriate risk controls where necessary and ensure that the Credit Union institutes systems to prevent, detect and report monthly these identifiable risks.
  • Liaises with affiliates, regulatory authorities, and law enforcement agencies as appropriate.
  • Provides monthly reports on the conduct of and results of risk and compliance reviews.
  • Collaborates with management in continuous review of credit union’s systems, internal control procedures and procedures to ensure that they are current and adequate to meet the changing needs of our operating environment.
  • Provides advice and guidance to all staff in identifying and monitoring key risks.
  • Provides support, education, and training to staff to build risk awareness within the Credit Union.
  • Establishes and quantifies the Credit Union’s 'risk appetite', i.e., the level risk that is acceptable.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Professional qualification in Finance/Accounting/Risk Management.
  • Professional qualification in Risk/Fraud Management.
  • Knowledge and/or understanding of Project Management disciplines, and effective Operations Governance Methods and Processes.
  • Superior knowledge of Regulatory Guidelines.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Familiar with Auditing principles and processes.
  • Familiar with Credit Union business would be an asset.
  • Proven ability to positively influence change and champion critical change initiatives.
  • Preferably at least three (3) years’ experience in Compliance, Risk or Audit activities.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications including Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of the financial services industry.
