Job Summary

The Senior Process Engineer is responsible for the provision of technical assistance to corporate management on the overall engineering and operational aspects of the plant and designated projects to achieve desired levels of capital efficiency, project feasibility, safety, and operability. These activities are expected to be conducted safely, cost-effectively, and reliably and must be delivered in a manner that consistently adds value to the company’s overall business process. The position will also be required to provide support to the Company's operations, including its subsidiaries and new business ventures.

Dimensions

The position of Senior Process Engineer operates as a resource to corporate management and avails a range of engineering, technical and process related advice and assistance.  The position must have a sound knowledge in the application of engineering concepts, principles, codes and standards and best practices related to process plant operations.  The Senior Process Engineer must also exhibit a working knowledge of Process Safety Management practices and a high degree of analytical ability with the capacity to produce conceptual and detailed engineering design work.

Nature & Scope

The position operates under general guidance at the level of the Vice President – Engineering but also brings the application of engineering standards, practices and procedures to the performance outcomes established for the various work plans and projects.  Assistance on matters of policy and technical direction is available at the level of the Vice President – Engineering.  The position interfaces internally with Operations, Business Development, Finance, Technology and Risk, Supply Chain Management and HSSS Departments and externally with Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Contractors, Equipment Vendors, Consultants and Regulatory Bodies such as the MEEA and OSH.  

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Provide process engineering expertise and quality control for all stages of Engineering; from Conceptual to Basic or Front-End Design (including verification of design basis) through to Detail Engineering, Construction, Commissioning and Start-up.
  2. Perform Process Engineering Design Calculations and Simulations in the development of Conceptual and Basic Engineering Design packages.
  3. Provide process engineering expertise to the Operations Department by conducting analysis and evaluation of existing plant operations towards efficiency improvements and optimization in areas of chronic challenges.
  4. Develop and lead engineering projects in accordance with PPGPL’s stage gate process, ensuring compliance with engineering designs, codes, and standards (e.g., API, NFPAs) and technical specifications.
  5. Develop cost estimation at the required accuracy at the different stage gates.
  6. Complete all deliverables required at each stage gate (e.g., Risk Assessments, Gate Review Packages and Presentations) in the development of projects.
  7. Prepare well-defined scope of works, requests for proposal / invitations to bid (RFPs / ITBs), contract and basis of bids documents for execution of Project EPC contracts.
  8. Apply established engineering and occupational health, safety and environmental codes and standards.
  9. Prepare technical and provide inputs into economic calculations; Conduct analyses and evaluations and make recommendations for all aspects of plant operations and verification of project design including screening of project and project alternatives.
  10. Perform root cause analysis in identifying failures and equipment inefficiencies.
  11. Review and evaluation of bids and contracts.
  12. Undertake, monitor, and control project budget and project scheduling.
  13. Monitor the performance of external resources to ensure compliance with design and contract specifications.
  14. Participate in Commissioning and Start-up Planning and Preparation.
  15. Participate in HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, What Ifs, Risk Assessments, Piping Model and P&ID Reviews to ensure compliance with design and/or accepted engineering specifications and practice.

 

Job Specifications

Minimum Acceptable Academic Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical and Process Engineering or equivalent from an accredited tertiary institution. 

The following certification will be an asset:

  • Registered Engineer with the Board of Engineering

AND

Minimum Number of Years of Relevant Experience:

Ten (10) years related working experience in engineering within the petrochemical industry or oil and gas environment or gas processing and terminal operation.

Specific Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Experience with hydrocarbon plant processing and technologies, terminal operations, and utility systems.
  • Knowledge of engineering and best practices related to process plant operations.
  • A high level of proficiency with the Aspen suite of software (EDR, Dynamics, Aspen Capital cost estimator) for plant process modelling.
  • A high level of proficiency and working knowledge in the application of industry discipline codes and standards used in hydrocarbon processing facilities.
  • Familiarity of Microsoft Project software for schedule development, monitoring and control.
