We are interested in recruiting suitably qualified and competent individuals to fill the following position:

Pharmacist

Key Responsibility:

Role Summary: Provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care by collaborating with physicians, nurses and other members of the health team. Supervising and instructing all pharmacy technicians. Responsible for safe and efficient delivery on inpatients and outpatient pharmacy services in accordance with the stated departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Monitors physician orders, prescriptions and drug profiles to ensure proper dispensing of pharmaceuticals, identification and correction of potential allergic reaction, drug interaction and incompatibilities.
  2. Enters medication orders onto medication profiles and updates medication profiles as required.
  3. Compounds and dispenses prescription medication and other pharmaceuticals supplies.
  4. Supervises and checks the work of pharmacy technician and less experienced and qualified staff.
  5. Coordinates and monitors technician activities and prepared medications for accuracy and quality prior to dispensing in all areas.
  6. Responsible for the accurate dispensing and timely distribution of drugs and medication for inpatient and outpatients.
  7. Ensuring medication reaches the patient in the correct form and dose-this may include tablets, capsules, ointments, injection, inhalers and creams.
  8. Ensures that the pharmacy and other areas of drug storage are equipped and maintained in accordance with appropriate regulations and products are stored appropriately and securely to ensure freshness and potency.
  9. Maintains records of prescription orders filled in a computerized form.
  10. Provides explanations and patient counseling and directions for proper usage of all prescriptions for outpatients.
  11. Counsels patients on the effect, dosage and route of administration of their drug treatments, particularly those who require complex drug therapy.
  12. Communicates effectively with patients’ relatives, community pharmacists and other medical practitioners.
  13. Ensures that all patients assisted drugs sold are recorded in the duly designated register.
  14. Ensures controlled drug prescriptions are dispensed in accordance with the law of Saint Lucia and INCB (International Narcotic Control Board).
  15. Assumes designated area responsibility in the absence of the immediate supervisor.
  16. Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of his/her knowledge, skills and abilities.
  17. Ensures that all areas in the Pharmacy are secured and keys safely stored in accordance with established procedures and Pharmacy Laws.
  18. Reports any occurrence not consistent with the operation of the hospital or standard of services for patients, employees or visitors and situations that puts patients, staff or visitors at risk of injury or other harm.

Education / Licensure

  • Diploma, Associate Degree in Pharmacy from a recognized University.
  • Valid License to practice.
  • Fluent in English

Professional Experience

  • At least 1 year experience in pharmacy practice.
  • Experience in extemporaneous compounding.

Specialized Knowledge

  • Exhibit knowledge in drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and rug interaction.
  • Knowledge in chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, patient care technique, biopharmaceutics, drug stability, microbiology, quality assurance and medication administration techniques.
  • Demonstrates ability in communication, instruction and interacting with other health professionals.
  • Good communication skills and ability to manage people.
