About this position

We are looking for a dynamic and expert professional for the Financial Institutions Division (FLI) of the Investment Operations Department (INO).

You will work in the Investment Operations Department (INO) that follows a matrix model, with three Segment Divisions covering Infrastructure and Energy, Financial Institutions and Corporates, and three transversal areas such as the Financial Products and Services Division (responsible for the capital market solutions, financing solutions for funds, equity and trade and supply chain finance); the Advisory Services and Blended Finance Team; and the Portfolio Management Division.

Our division supports Financial Institutions (FIs) through debt and equity financing, guarantees, and knowledge to promote economic development, job creation and the adoption of sustainable environmental, social and corporate governance principles.

What you’ll do:

  • Business Development:  Source, assess and lead the identification, selection, and origination of bankable financial institutions transactions including, but not limited to, the initial screening of project applications, evaluation of feasibility studies, and preparation of concept notes, assessing transaction risks and advising on appropriate risk mitigation actions, in IDB Invest Caribbean member countries (Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad & Tobago) that are consistent with the IDB Invest’s operating policies. Develop (and/or guide teams in the preparation of) pitch books and client proposals in support of new business
  • Client Relationships:  Handle client relationships and provide insights into sector developments in member countries to anticipate new investment opportunities and/or performance issues. Propose a value proposition that includes financial solutions jointly with non-financial solutions and mobilization. Coordinate closely with the different internal areas to incorporate social, environmental, trade finance, capital markets and advisory colleagues to contributeto our clients' businesses and achieve sustainable development impact.
  • Transaction Management:  Lead and manage project teams to deliver transactions on a timely and expeditious basis and using best practice standards. Lead the conduct of appraisal meetings to gather the necessary technical, legal, economic, and financial and other information requirements to assess the merits of potential investment opportunities as required. actively handling key work and directing and coordinating work of other team members, including colleagues from across multiple departments as relevant. Take full responsibility and accountability for transaction-related decisions and relationships.
  • Deal Execution: Identify and analyze fundamental competitive strengths and weaknesses of investment opportunities or portfolio companies and identify financial and non‐financial issues, opportunities and risk/reward factors (e.g. business environment, country, and sponsor). Ensure that defined transactional requirements recorded in documentation are implemented  accordingly encompassing other areas (environmental, social and governance safeguards, finance, development effectiveness, legal, and risk) into the structuring of transactions and closing of deals.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Build upon IDB Invest’s capabilities in industry and market research of financial institutions to guide the business origination and execution efforts aligned with the investment strategy of IDB Invest and its mandate for the private sector. Initiate collaboration and share expertise as a subject matter expert, providing advice, peer review and contribution to knowledge products to strengthen internal and/or external client solutions. Maintain knowledge of the financial markets and transactions involving financial institutions. Handle preparation of lessons learned from projects. Disseminate information to project teams on transaction strengths, weaknesses, risks, and mitigation options. Play a meaningful role in promoting IDB Invest by developing key relationships in the private sector development communities, liaising with industry authorities, potential clients, partners, and stakeholders. Cross-sell with Caribbean financial institutions the products and services of the two other IDB Invest origination divisions: corporate lending and infrastructure.

What you'll need

  • Education: An advanced degree (Master’s, MBA, or equivalent) in Finance, Business Administration, International Development, or other relevant field. Additional professional qualifications (ACCA, CFA, etc..) would be an asset
  • Experience
    • At least 10 years of progressive experience, with at least 3 years at a senior level, covering the financial sector in investment origination, structuring or portfolio management with a shown track-record in FIs.
    • Advanced financial, credit and risk evaluation skills, with proven ability to structure and negotiate a variety of complex financial instruments, in both debt and equity
    • Validated experience identifying, originating and qualifying new business opportunities developing and successfully implementing client engagements.
    • Sound business judgment and strong problem solving/negotiation skills including the ability to identify issues and present creative, practical solutions, as well as ability to work effectively on simultaneous projects under time pressure.  
    • Strong financial modeling/valuation and analytical skills is a plus.
    • Capacity to work successfully in multicultural teams and across boundaries.
    • Understanding client needs and challenges, market idiosyncrasies, and drivers of change in the Caribbean is highly valued.
    • Demonstrated relationships with the business community including network of top-level contacts in the financial services and investment industries in the sub-region, and governmental authorities, as needed.
    • Understanding of the FinTech space, including ability to develop strategic partnerships with FinTech companies would be an asset.
    • Excellent written, presentation, and business level communications skills in English.
    • Genuine dedication to sustainable development.
    • The position will require regional and international travel; hence the candidate should be willing and open to travel.
  • Language: Fluent in English and an intermediate knowledge of Spanish; French is desirable.

Requirements 

  • Citizenship: You are either a citizen of Jamaica or with residency or legal permit to work in Caricom countries 
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

  • National staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement.
