JOB SUMMARY:

 

Probation Officers are required to provide high quality and professional services to offenders to support and encourage productive citizens. Through this process Probation Officers are required to prepare relevant reports and supervise offenders in the community within the term set by the Court or Parole Board.  They work for Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, which aims to protect the public, reduce re-offending, ensure offenders are aware of the effects of crime on victims and the public, and address offender’s criminogenic needs. 

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Supervise probationers and parolees in the community to evaluate their progress and ensure regular contact is made in accordance with the Department’s policy.
  2. Prepare and present reports (Pre-sentencing, Parole, and Progress) on adult and juvenile Offenders as requested by the Court or Parole Board in a timely manner.
  3. Provide counseling and facilitate rehabilitative groups utilizing a variety of evidence-based techniques aimed at addressing the offender’s criminogenic needs.
  4. Conduct risk assessments and utilize the results to assist with the management and treatment planning of the offender.
  5. Administer drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Department’s policy.
  6. Document and report all violations, initiate breach proceedings in a timely manner, and make suitable recommendation for the disposal of the case.
  7. Assist with re-entry planning by coordinating services for the offender’s successful reintegration into society.
  8. Maintain a manageable caseload and ensure all case files, records, and progress reports are up-to-date and easily accessible.
  9. Arrange court-ordered treatment services and closely monitor community-based sentences.
  10. Study and review literature and other appropriate materials related to probation, criminal justice, and social work to systematically acquire essential knowledge needed to excel as a Probation/Parole officer.
  11. Conduct home visits, review the electronic monitoring platform, and other community contacts to assist in monitoring the offender’s adherence to conditions of probation or parole.
  12. Help to establish and maintain contact with persons and organizations in the community that may provide necessary resources for individuals serviced by the Department.
  13. Liaise with internal and external resources to advocate for clients and make referrals.
  14. Perform Public Relation Functions by: -

ü  attending meetings with various agencies, groups and persons to discuss common problems and promote a better understanding of the Probation/After Care programme;

ü  participate and facilitate lectures, discussions and film shows on Probation, Rehabilitation and other related matters

ü  Educating the public in order to create a favourable climate towards the rehabilitation of offenders and securing job opportunities.

  1. Any other duties which logically related to the job.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

ü  A bachelor’s degree in Social Science (Criminal Justice, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Human Services) from a recognized University and practical experience in course work within the Criminal Justice System;

ü  Past experience as a fully qualified probation/parole officer would be an asset.

 

EXPERIENCE

  • Criminal court proceedings
  • Supervising and building staff capacity
  • Research and study the local laws that pertain directly and indirectly to the job.
  • Observation and interaction with client supervision under professional guidance within a probation office, parole office or correctional facility.
  • Actual case work and supervision in a probation office, parole office or correctional facility.
  • Experience of designing and facilitating group work with specific offenders including at least one of the following groups; Sex Offenders, Violent Offenders, Domestic Violence Perpetrators, Juvenile Offenders.
  • Broad knowledge of the range of Probation interventions
  • Where possible experience of participating and managing multi agency decision making forums such as MAPPA and Parole Boards.

 

including three years of supervisory experience.

 

 

SALARY:      Grade 6.1 - $34,751.60 per annum
