Mud Loggers monitor drilling activities and provide information to the drilling/completions team regarding the well's status during the process.

OVERVIEW

Mud Loggers are assigned to the Surface Logging Services (Mud Logging) Department. They are required to use a range of equipment and laboratory techniques, such as binocular microscopes, ultraviolet fluorescence and thin-section analysis, to create mud logs showing a geological record of the site being drilled. Drilling parameters that are monitored include; speed of rotation, rate of penetration, oil and gas shows (whether oil or gas is present), pit levels, cutting rate and mud-flow rate among others.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work in cabin, process, analyse, log and describe rock samples.
  • Use various laboratory techniques to analyse samples for presence of hydrocarbons.
  • Monitor drilling parameters, gas data, geological evaluation of samples, update Drilling Data Logs and Formation Evaluation Logs.
  • Interpret information and feed it back to the data engineer/drilling team to enhance safety and success.
  • Assist Data Engineer with operation and maintenance of a real-time computer-based data acquisition system, which records all aspects of rig activity.
  • Predict dangerous situations, such as over-pressured formations.
  • Assist the wellsite geologist during coring operations.
  • Provide written reports and Logs to the data engineer, drilling team and company.
  • Complete End of Well reports and Logs as per customer requirements.
  • Undertake on-site maintenance when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of a first degree or equivalent in Geology, Petroleum Engineering, Physics, Chemistry.
  • Minimum of 4-5 years’ experience in a similar role/industry.
  • Good computer skills and the ability to work with sophisticated technology.
  • The ability to absorb a range of technical information in areas such as geology, chemistry, mechanics, electricity, electronics and computer science.
  • Strong mathematical skills.
  • Analytical, critical thinking and decision-making ability.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Ability to cope with the challenging working environment of the oil industry.

 

(Please note that customers operations are 24/7 and may require day, afternoon, and night shift work including weekends)
