The Registered Nurse is responsible for the implementation of approved nursing and hospital policies to ensure quality outputs and patient satisfaction. He/she manages and directs nursing care activities and coordinates care planning with other disciplines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers daily.
  2. Ensure safe, compassionate patient care to a standard as laid out by the Nursing Council of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of the UK.
  3. Participate in shift handover to ensure accurate and relevant information communicated and received, pertaining to all aspects of nursing care.
  4. Check patients on the wards ensuring all patients are comfortable and become familiar with the patients and relatives.
  5. Prepare doctors’ medical notes for their respective patients, ensuring all reports are available, medication has been given as prescribed, and all charts are updated.
  6. Hand / take over the DDA drugs and emergency equipment on all shifts.
  7. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops.
  8. Check and inform doctors about any new or relevant patient result or occurrences e.g., diascans (Blood sugars) and administer insulin when necessary.
  9. Attend doctor’s round and record notes and instructions to assist in the smooth transition of shifts and to ensure all instructions are carried out efficiently.
  10. Assist with phlebotomy and cannulating when required.
  11. Prepare patients for surgery from admissions to post-operative care.
  12. Attend to dressing of patient’s wounds while maintaining aseptic technique.
  13. Order and stock medical supplies.
  14. Ensure accurate and thorough documentation of information pertaining to patients in a legible manner in the appropriate location.
  15. Ensure safe administration of medication and proper records are kept for all drugs.
  16. Ensure drugs, needles and bloods are discarded properly.
  17. Accept walk-in, emergency patients and ensure proper care is administered until medical officer arrives/ triage.
  18. Maintain a safe and clean environment by calling for assistance from healthcare support personnel.
  19. Ensure the hospital management information system is up to date and discharging of patients is done efficiently.
  20. Perform other related duties as may be required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of general Nursing theory and practice.
  • Some knowledge of hospital rules and regulations.
  • Some knowledge of house-keeping, personal hygiene and bedside nursing.

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

 

 

  • Ability to plan, organise and supervise the work of direct reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and demonstrate excellent customer service.
  • Ability to demonstrate integrity and maintain confidentiality.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Associate Degree in Nursing or Bachelor Degree in Nursing.
  • Post graduate specialty: Cardiology, Cardiac Care, Intensive Care, Urology, Orthopaedic, Trauma, Theatre Nurse/training an asset.
  • Must be registered with the Nursing Council of Trinidad and Tobago.
  • At least three (3) years’ relevant work experience.

OTHER:

  • Must be able to work a shift system, weekends and public holidays.
