1.   Job SUMMARY:

To deliver evidenced based medical care to patients attending the Emergency Department.

To partake in Emergency Department medical coverage as required by roster.

2.   DIMENSIONS:

Resources

Where neccessary requests equipment/resources through designated channels in conjunction with colleagues.

3.   RESPONSIBILITIES:

The post holder will do or cause to be done the activities below.  These activities are not exhaustive and other duties which are within the realms of his/ her qualifications, experience and ability may be required.

  1. Clinical

1.1 To examine, diagnose and treat patients with a wide range of health issues that can have           physical, emotional and social parameters.

1.2  To provide holistic advice, relevant to the social and cultural background of patients.

1.3 To make appropriate and timely referral to secondary/specialist care where required.

1.4 Makes referrals where appropriate to other healthcare professionals.

1.5  Provide evidence based patient care within acceptable regional /worldwide standards.

1.6 Provides clinical guidance, direction and co-ordination of activties for supportive care , including follow up care within scope of practice.

1.7 Performs other professional duties as may be required within the scope and ability of the practitioner.

1.8 Assist colleagues in a collegiate manner where neccessary.

1.9 Advise and supervise where neccesary the delivery of nursing care to patients within

 the Emergency Department.

  1. 2.       Administrative

2.1.   Creation, review and maintenance of Policy &Proceedures

Partake with colleagues in the creation, review and maintenance of policies and proceedures for the Emergency Department.

 

All policies and procedures will be in conformity with the requirements of the PA.

All existing policy/ procedures will be reviewed at periods set at the time of writing and, where changes in practices/ systems occur which affect the currency of the policies/ procedures, at the time of such change.

Any changes will also be after due consultation with other stakeholders.

 

2.2.   Adherence to Policy & Procedures

Adhere to policies and procedures, or advise CMS of variance and reason for variance if it is felt that a variance is neccessary for the best interests of patient/ hospital.

     

      2.3  Assist with the selection of equipment and disposables for the Emergency Department.

 

  1. 3.       Committees

3.1.   Membership of Committees

 

The post holder may be required to sit on committees either as a routine or as ad hoc requirements for investigative or other purposes

 

  1. Quality and Best Practice

The post holder will conform to any and all quality initiatives which may be present within the hospital and ensure quality and best practice within their work at all times.

 

  1.  Continuing Medical Education (CME)

        5.1  The Program

The Post holder will attend CME sessions as required for maintenance of Medical Licence

 

       5.2   Presentations

The post holder will take part in the program by presenting a topic at least on an annual basis.

 

  1. 6.       Advisory

The post holder will provide Emergency Medicine advice and guidance to colleagues as required

The post holder may also at times be required to provide Emergency Medicine advise and guidance to CMS/CEO.

 

    

4.   DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY:

Responsible for clinical desicion making in appropriate areas

5.   COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal:   

Emergency Medicine colleagues, Family Practice colleagues, Out-Patient nurses, other medical practitioners

External: 

As required by CMS or CMO with Ministry of Health, NHIP and TCIG representatives, private medical practitioners in TCI

6.     KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR JOB

Education

Required

  • Holder of an approriate medical degree and, where necessary, Royal College / Boards / other certification in a specialty field of medicine.
  • Current ACLS  certification

 

Desired

  • Current  PALS, ATLS certification

 

Experience

Required

  • At least five years as a medical practitioner at independent level within Emergency Medicine

 

Communication Skills

Required

Good written and oral communication skills in English

Demonstrated Skills/Abilities

Desirable

  • Basic computer skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft/Windows operating system
