Our client is Barbados’ largest general insurance provider, writing business in all areas of general insurance including, Property, Liability, Accident, Motor, Marine, Aviation and Transit Insurance. Due to growth, they are recruiting an Investment & Pension Fund Accountant

Overview: Our client is Barbados’ largest general insurance provider, writing business in all areas of general insurance including, Property, Liability, Accident, Motor, Marine, Aviation and Transit Insurance. Due to growth, they are recruiting an Investment & Pension Fund Accountant to support the effective management of the Company’s investment portfolios by providing high-quality, analytical, reporting and operational assistance.

The successful candidate will maintain integrity between the investment sub‑ledger and general ledger, and support management reporting, regulatory returns and external audits through high‑quality schedules and reconciliations.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

Investment & Pension Fund Accounting:

  • Records and maintains all investment and pension fund related accounting entries in the accounting system (currently Sage 300), including:

-            Purchases, disposals and maturities.

-             Investment in income and accruals.

-            Amortization and fair value movements.

-            Pension fund capital movements where applicable.

  • Maintains detailed investment and pension sub‑ledgers and ensures accurate and timely posting to the general ledger.
  • Ensures accounting for investments and pension funds is performed in compliance with IFRS and applicable regulatory requirements.

 

Reconciliations & Controls:
  • Performs monthly reconciliations between investment and pension sub‑ledgers and the general ledger. 
  • Reconciles investment and pension cash accounts, custodian statements and control accounts.
  • Maintains supporting schedules for: Investment and pension fund balances; Investment and pension income; Fair value adjustments; Accrued income and receivables; cash balances related to investment and pension activities.
  • Investigates and resolves reconciling items on a timely basis with appropriate documentation.
  • Supports strong internal controls over investment and pension accounting processes.

 

Audit & Financial Reporting Support:
  • Prepares audit schedules and supporting documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Responds to audit and regulatory queries related to investment accounting and balances.
  • Liaises with Financial Reporting to support the preparation of: Regulatory returns and Statutory disclosures related to investments.

 

Management Reporting & Collaboration:
  • Supports the preparation of management reports by providing reliable investment accounting data and reconciled balances.
  • Works closely with the Investment Manager to ensure accounting information aligns with investment activity and decision‑making needs.
  • Assists in responding to ad‑hoc data requests related to investment performance, balances and cash movements.

 

FP&A Support:
  • Liaises with FP&A to provide accurate and timely inputs for:

-            Investment income budgets and forecasts.

-            Expected cash inflows and outflows related to investments.

-            Reinvestment, maturity, and disposal of cash movements.

  • Provides explanations and supporting details for variances between actuals, budget and forecast related to investment income and balances.

 

Process Improvement:
  • Assists in improving investment and pension accounting processes, reconciliations and reporting workflows.
  • Supports initiatives to enhance automation, documentation, and efficiency.
  • Maintains up‑to‑date documentation of accounting procedures related to investments and pension funds.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Banking or equivalent degree in a related discipline.
  • Progress toward Level 2 or higher of a recognized professional accountancy program (ACCA, CPA, CMA).
  • A minimum of four (4) years’ experience in an accounting or finance environment.
  • Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • Knowledge of Sage ERP 300 and Pure as well as programming knowledge and familiarity with SQL would be an asset.
  • Ability to analyze and report on financial data to support strategic decision-making.
  • Previous work experience in the insurance industry and/or sound knowledge of insurance practices would be an asset.
  • Basic understanding of portfolio management and asset allocation concepts.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (formulas, data analysis, basic modelling).
  • Keeps financial information and corporate plans confidential to protect the company’s interests.
  • Problem-solving with attention to detail, time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, work autonomously and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong ability to use judgment and discretion.
