The Dominica Hospitals Authority invites applications from suitably qualified professionals to serve as an Internist in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital (DCFH). This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery of high-quality patient care while shaping the advancement of medical services in Dominica.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Hospital Medical Director, the Internist will:

  • Diagnose and treat diseases, disorders, and injuries of the human body.
  • Provide leadership in clinical decision-making and patient management.
  • Supervise and mentor junior doctors and medical staff.
  • Ensure adherence to medical protocols, ethical standards, and quality care guidelines.
  • Participate in training, research, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

This role requires a highly skilled and compassionate medical leader committed to patient-centered care, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Leadership

  • Diagnose, investigate, and manage patients effectively in the internal medicine setting.
  • Provide consultant-level expertise and perform appropriate medical procedures.
  • Offer clinical guidance to junior doctors and nurses, ensuring accuracy in patient records.
  • Refer patients to other specialties as necessary.

Workforce & Training

  • Supervise physicians within the department to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Lead training sessions for doctors and nurses to improve clinical management skills.
  • Provide cover during colleagues’ absences when required.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure patients receive the highest standard of care and satisfaction.
  • Hold discussions with patients’ families and caregivers to provide guidance and updates.
  • Prepare timely and accurate police or coroner’s reports when required.
  • Develop and enforce medical policies, protocols, and clinical guidelines.
  • Participate in morbidity/mortality meetings and quality assurance initiatives.

Departmental Development

  • Design and update protocols for managing conditions commonly treated in the department.
  • Promote adherence to ethical standards and hospital policies.
  • Maintain discipline, professionalism, and high standards among staff.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Postgraduate Degree in Internal Medicine from an accredited university.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ post-specialization experience as a Specialist Medical Officer in Internal Medicine.
  • Must be a Registered Medical Practitioner with eligibility for registration with the Medical Board of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

  • Expert knowledge of clinical protocols, diagnostic methods, and internal medicine practices.
  •  Strong administrative and leadership skills with proven ability to coordinate staff and resources.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and mentorship skills.
  •  High level of emotional intelligence, sound judgment, and decisiveness.
  • Advanced problem-solving, conflict management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Proficiency in medical IT systems and hospital management software.

Remuneration

Salary and benefits will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Tenure

Employment will be offered on a contractual or permanent basis.
