Human Resource Officer – Industrial Relations


Reporting to the Manager, Human Resource and Administration, the Human Resource Officer-Industrial Relations will be detail-oriented and will provide solid professional and technical support to management and staff. He/ she will ensure that the company remains in compliance with the practices and principles of good industrial relations and assist in establishing a balance between employee and Company objectives. The incumbent will develop and maintain positive relationships with employees, management and trade unions, conduct investigations into employee misconduct or violations of company policies, consult with the organization on labor laws and applicable legislation and provide counsel to employees regarding company policies, regulations, and procedures.

Core Functions

  • Facilitating communication between management and employees to resolve issues and foster a positive working environment.
  • Conducting investigations into employee grievances and workplace complaints, ensuring thorough documentation, follow up and reporting.
  • Advising management on labor relations and compliance with employment laws, regulations and policies, workforce planning and productivity issues and prepare and present reports and recommendations to management.
  • Collaborating with the HR team to develop training programs on labor relations and employee engagement.
  • Monitoring industry trends and legislative changes affecting labor relations and draft related workplace policies and recommend necessary adjustments.
  • Handling all employee grievances, disputes and complaints and recommend appropriate approaches towards achieving resolutions.
  • Facilitating and lead negotiations during negotiations between management and trade unions.
  • Developing and implementing industrial relations policies and procedures.
  • Representing the Company during consultations and external and conciliatory meetings with the Ministry of Labour and the IDT as required.
  • Employing relevant communications methods and approaches to ensure timely and accurate information to managers, staff and trade unions.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations or related field
  • Minimum 8-10 years’ experience in an industrial relations or human resources, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Jamaican labor laws, regulations and codes/practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a focus on conflict resolution.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment and being the Company’s representative at union negotiations.
  • People-oriented and a passion towards employee engagement while ensuring industrial harmony.
  • Experience in managing a progressive disciplinary process and the conduct of disciplinary hearings.
  • Experience in writing policy and procedures and providing guidance to managers and supervisors on industrial relations policy and procedure.
